Tank Crew AI Commands

I can't for the life of me figure out how to tell my AI gunner to actually.. target stuff and fire at will.

I can easily assign targets, the problem there is the moron will track that target until he destroys it, regardless of whatever else you tell him to target. 

I managed -exactly once- to tell the AI gunner to target and fire at will. I THOUGHT I did this by enabling autopilot, issuing a 'Fire from Short Stops' order, then a 'Engage Ground Targets at Will' order.. but I can't seem to ever repeat the feat. I've tried different variations of that but to no avail.. the gunner will *not* engage on their own. I was testing this for now in quick missions.

Any help appreciated.
