The manifold pressure (MP) or Boost (in RAF planes) gauge and sometimes the RPM, depending on the plane. That shows the power being generated by the engine. Check the tech specs to see what the engine settings are at each mode. For example, when boost is activated on the P-47 you will get 64" of manifold pressure when the throttle is fully forward. When the throttle is fully forward and boost is off you get 52 inches of manifold pressure (this is the combat setting). In this case the RPM stays the same. But with the Spitfire, for example, fully boosted  mode comes from advancing both RPM and MP to maximum, there is no separate 'boost' button.

It's possible to have boost enabled on American planes and not be getting higher manifold pressure, if your throttle setting is too low. In that case you will see your MP suddenly surge from 44 inches or so to 64 when you move the throttle past a certain position. Just click the button off and the MP will return to normal.
