Heavy Guns

Gents,

Was just wondering about the tracers from the 8.8cm and 52-K AA guns. These guns in the game, as of the last couple of updates, appear to be firing tracers out to 500m or thereabouts. Why is this?

Regards

I have no idea why they added that into the game. Looks horrible. It was great before.

Is heavy flak supposed to have tracers?

I had the same question. Looks weird.

Yes, it started a few updates ago. It was weird when I first spotted it...thought the flares were moving a lot faster or something!

From a quick google it looks like, for example the 88mm had a tracer element when it was used with AP ammo against armor. But the article I found does not mention tracer usage for anti-aircraft. Not a scholarly piece by any means, so fair warning: https://warfarehistorynetwork.com/2017/07/10/wwii-weapons-the-german-88mm-gun/

I'm not an expert but I think it would be useless really, because the explosion of the shell would show you where the round was bursting, which was what you want to know when using guns like that.

Do the guns in the tanks on Tank Crew have tracers in them? Maybe there's some global setting for heavy guns to have tracers and it got put into the game like that.

Yes they do. i suspect you may be on to the root cause there.

The heavier artillery guns don't have tracers. For the German 88mm Flak it might, however, have to do with the same gun being used in the Tiger, so you might be on the right path. But what about the Russian 85mm Flak?

It's not the same gun as the Tiger I.  The Tiger is a shorter 88mm/L52 where the gun is an 88/L71.  King Tiger, Nashorn, Ferdinand, and JagdPanther all carried the L71.

Nope, the Tiger had the 8.8cm KwK 36 L/56, the 8.8cm Flak36/37 had the same barrel. There were some modifications for the gun to make it fit into the Tiger turret, but it is more or less the same gun with a muzzle brake.

The 8.8cm L/71 is the barrel of the Pak 43, which was used in the tanks, you mentioned.
