The beauty of Flying Circus in VR: try this recorded track

Quite frequently I can only afford short periods for IL-2, from 30 min to 1 hour, and I just go to Flying Circus to have some dogfights and have fun with the flying feeling and evade myself...

With those flights you can really hear and "feel" the wind/smoke in your face, the inertia of the plane converting altitude in speed and viceversa, the large view from the Albatros, etc etc and all that at 80fps ALWAYS. With Ultra settings and High shadows and High clouds.

I see that quite a few of the VR folks here don´t have Flying Circus and I would like to give them the opportunity to try it with a couple of  short recorded flight records (2 min and 5 min). You can download them from this link. You only need to put them in the Data\Track folder of the game:

Take a seat and enjoy!

Hey! I can also only afford at most an hour in VR, because I get nausea after a while. And you're totally right, I love flying the WW1 airplanes in VR, even more than the WW2 ones. Especially the fokker Dr.1, it's just so cool to see those wings. And the up close and personal nature also helps a lot to negate the problems due to shitty resolution. Cheers!

Very nice! May I ask, why is it that the game can run so smoothly? Older engine, less polygons, less ground stuff?

It's the same engine as GB...you just unlock new planes and a map when you purchase FC.

My guess is maybe it is because the map is significantly smaller, and there are a lot fewer shells flying around, etc. Less load on the CPU.

I have only had a short amount of time in FC, but it is beautiful and an absolute joy to fly!

And because there are not that complex objects, the trenches and impact craters as a sample are in ugly plain 2D ink spots, while city’s at the frontline are intact as if no war is going on at a couple of meters further on.  ?

Yes, as said, there are a number of things which load less the CPU and GPU:

CPU:

- Just a Duel, so only two planes in the air. Almost no ground units.

- Simpler cabin, less gauges to calculate

- No glass in the cabin (calculate the shadows over the glass consume CPU, you can verify that by flying I-16 or by putting the head out of the glass with fpsVR)

- Simpler and flat map. Arras map is like Lapino map.

- Perhaps, less calculations in Damage Model due to simpler plane

GPU:

- Overall less polygons to render

- I use Ultra Settings with High clouds, and in the QMB put just "Cloudy". So a bit less of Clouds. If put Average clouds then the GPU is closer to the limit (I am using Index at 126% SS)

Flying Circus is, hands down, the best VR combat flight sim experience available. Better then IL-2 BoX and DCS. The sense of immersion is profound. If you have VR and don't have FC, you're doing yourself a great injustice.

I have had it since the release... ROF before IL-2.

It wasn't exactly a well kept secret or anything.

;)

There is an entire forum dedicated to it:

https://forum.il2sturmovik.com/forum/117-il-2-sturmovik-flying-circus/

Which is better is quite subjective and dependent on the individual and their preferences.

But yeah FC is pretty sweet. IL-2 though will always be my first love.

Same here. I'm speaking specifically about the VR experience which is non-existent in ROF and mediocre at best in DCS. There are probably quite a few BoX WWII guys out there flying VR and because the time period of WWI doesn't interest them, are missing out on a really great VR experience. Even if you're not into WWI, the sheer immersion of FC+VR will put a big smile on your face. :)

I agree with the OP. I just recently took the plunge and bought FC. Even after the price break announcement I had hesitated as I didn't know whether the laser beam accuracy of RoF AI had been carried over to FC. Thankfully, that irritant is no longer present. So far I've only flown the SE5a in 1v1's against "ace" AI in Pflaz and Alby, however I appreciate how I can feel the SE5 controls mush when I don't keep my airspeed up and i've learned to use the stabilizer wheel to advantage. It is no longer necessary to hedgehop in DF's. Even though the map is small,  the overall "feel" of the DF and the visuals in VR with my Index seem well worth the price.

Flying Circus is my go to for people when they come over to try out flying in VR. Easier planes, less controls. Very easy to get up and the air flying with friends and family showing them the awesomeness of VR.

I'm in process of installing IL-2 and just recently purchased several offerings. I will be setting up VR, and have purchased Flying Circus and look forward to it very much; I love ROF and know WW1 flight will be awesome with VR. As a side, we can fly any aircraft from the Great Battles in the FC maps, yes? As I have a challenged set up, and already plan on mostly flying in the BOS map, I think I would help my cause if I could bring it down even more in ground detail so as to allow my system to direct resources towards flight rendering.

There is something visceral about flying open cockpit fighters in VR. I remember that feeling when flying the P-26 in War thunder VR, and Flying Circus takes it to the stratosphere.
