How to assign targets to the gunner?

So I´m still learning how TC works, the command menu is nice for tank commanding but I cant wrap myself around the "Assign Targets" and "Fire Control" menus work.

So I open the command menu, point at the enemy tank with the little command circle so it becomes a crosshair and click F1 to "Attack the Target".

Then my commander guy tells the gunner the target and... nothing happens!

How do I get my gunner to actually shoot stuff?

Hello,

there is another menu about fire control where you can ask different status ( fire from short stops, fire now, etc...)

Hello,

I set it up so when I stop he should fire, but even when I stop, the gunner doesn´t track the target I assign him, nor fires.

I usually :
1) tell the gunner to fire at will (afaik, tilde -> F1 -> F2),
2) then issue an order "Fire from short stops".
3) When I spot the target, I assign the said target aka. -> issue an attack order (if the AI didn't pick up own targets) and choose the type of ammo to use (it's arbitrary, AI will shoot whatever it feels like tbh).
3 1/2) If that doesn't work i repeat the process from step 3
4) ???
5a) profit...usually
5b) if it ain't it chief, then I do everything myself

BTW - It does not matter (speaking from my own experience)if you throw an attack order to your platoon. It will apply to your own gunner as well.

That helped, thanks!

Turns out I was telling my gunner to "do like me" instead of "fire at will" which is weird.

At "fire at will" I´d expect him engage targets without my input, those commands are most confusing.

I guess it depends on AI skill, and mission presets 'cos in some singleplayer missions own gunner just does it's thing and kills everything left right and center without my input. Other times i have to spot and assign every target i get, and sometimes they just refuse to act, even within 1,5 km range. A"I" is really weird in this game/sim ;)

Yeah, for example I have trouble spotting in the 3rd mission of the Last Chance scripted campaign, since the gunner keeps whirling the turrent around without my input. Its so annoying!

Edit: In my experience in mission making, at least with planes, the skill level doesn´t seem to influence behavior like the Mission Editor commands do. My guess is, its those commands or the player being in platoon command making the gunner go full automatic. I´ll definately try myself in making some tank missions sooner or later. That will be most excellent for testing my guess, should I come back later when I figured it out?

Yep, would be nice to know, how to tame gunners, who are thinking 'Let the clown up in the cuppola say whatever he wants, I'll make my own battle.'

I had the same experience, like you, the gunner turning the turret and shooting on his own, with me as commander being just a passenger.

Good Morning, everybody,

I'm still a beginner on TC and the behaviour of artificial intelligence is sometimes confusing, it's still an early access module, but I've noticed the following:

If you want to "play" in Tank Leader mode...
1/ Once in the armoured tank, at the driver's position, engage the automatic pilot (right CTRL + A, at my place) and immediately become the tank commander.
2/ give the order to start the engine and mark with the mouse the navigation point, the speed and the type of journey ( /road or direct ).
3/ locate a target and mark it with a cross with the mouse then type F1 attack target as well as the type of ammunition, this will indicate the distance and the type of target and if all goes well the shooter will execute the order as long as he has not destroyed the target or that you ask him to stop shooting.
NB: if he does not react, go to the menu order + F1 target assignment + F1 target by mission and repeat the order.
Same thing for the driver, if he does not execute a movement order, do F3 Movement + F1 movement by mission and repeat the order.

Doesn´t work consintently for me...

I did end up doing some test runs in the editor. The automatic gunner stuff is indeed dependant on the mission!

Having a attack area MCU for the player tank makes the gunner engage targets on his own!

Having wingmen tanks doesn´t seem to make the gunner target stuff automatically, but he seems to refuse to target things sometimes, same for the wingman.

I´m including the test missions so far in this post, so you guys can try it too.
Definately needs more testing... giving targeting orders indeed feels very screwy especially with a wingman tank!

Do you know if it might have been fixed with the new patch?

After a short test of 4.005 in user made campaign i noticed, that AI ignores tanks that could be considered "mobility KO" (destroyed tracks/engine). If the crew is still in that tank they WILL shoot back. I noticed that i could not get my AI to target and destroy those tanks. Not sure if i can reproduce that.

On the other hand getting my AI to pick targets for himself and shoot at them is working well, but it's more finnicky to mark targets manually.
