SKINS ADDED 10/10/2021

The two De Havilland's that I mentioned earlier were works in progress have now been finished and are uploaded onto HSD. Once the HSD team have put them through "curation" they should be available for everyone to download.

The white circular marking next to the serial number underneath the leading edge of the tail plane is the company logo of Westland Aircraft Works. Though not visible in the previews above I've attempted to add this onto the skins also. Had to make the thing up based on these images of the Westland Aircraft Works logo and what differences I could judge in photographs on the Wagtail and Westland built DH9. So take what I've made there with an pinch of salt. If anyone has better photographs of the logo on an aircraft from the Great War I would be very interested to see them!

I guess I could have left this out but I tend to like trying to include the small pointless details such as these. ?

SKINS ADDED 01/02/2022

Been a while since I've uploaded anything. Just not been doing much skinning past few months. The first of the two skins that I mentioned as works in progress in this post is now uploaded though (the other still needs some more work) and should be available to download on HSD once it's gone through their curation process.

SKINS ADDED 15/03/2022

To celebrate the release of the Gotha into Flying Circus I've released these three schemes onto HSD. They are all aircraft from the Manston War Flight that hunted the Gotha's that attempted attacked mainland Great Britain. They should be available to download once they have passed curation by the HSD team. Two were used by Arthur Brandon on the Gotha raid of 22nd August 1917;

Quote

On the morning of Wednesday 22nd August 1917, fifteen Gotha bombers of Kagohl 3 set out from their Belgian base led by Hauptmann (Captain) Rudolf Kleine. The plan was for a two-pronged attack; one to attack Sheerness then either Southend or Chatham; the other group to attack Dover. Mechanical problems forced four of the bombers to turn back while over the English Channel, then with the English Coast in sight, Kleine’s aircraft developed engine trouble as well and also had to turn back.

The V formation of enemy aircraft were heading towards North Foreland, but were reported at 1004 from the Kentish Knock Light Vessel, giving plenty of advanced warning. Observers at the North Foreland Look Out Station heard the roar from the incoming engines and were observed flying ENE directly for the Foreland. The alarm was raised both with airborne and land based units. Two miles out, anti-aircraft fire was put up by the land batteries and forced the enemy formation to break and turn North towards Margate where they arrived at 1026.

Flt Lt Arthur Frank Brandon of the Manston War Flight at RNAS Manston War School, in Sopwith Camel F.1 B3834 “Wonga Bonga” had already taken off at 0930 on a local patrol. He went up to 15,000 feet, but because he found it very cold, he decided to come back down. It was then that he saw a ground signal for “readiness”, knowing that aircraft were going to be scrambled. He climbed back to 15,000 feet and saw the rest of the flight climbing towards him. Wing Commander Robert Peel Ross had ordered the Manston War Flight of Drake, Fitzherbert, Harker and the Commanding Officer, Sqn Cdr C H Butler, into the air in their Sopwith Camels. Elsewhere, three aircraft from Eastchurch, six from Walmer and two from Dover were ordered up in response to the attack.

Brandon decided to get between the enemy and the sun, and already had the advantage of height, being 2,000 feet above them. He targeted one of the twin-engined aircraft, Gotha G.IV 663/16 and dived towards it. He resisted the urge to fire until he was 200 feet away. He fired about 18 rounds before he saw the rear gunner slump. He circled and attacked a total of three times whilst the enemy aircraft directed fire towards him, firing over 600 rounds towards the Gotha. His gunfire struck the Gotha’s starboard engine, which burst into flames, then the Gotha broke into pieces as it plunged to earth. Some wreckage fell at the Hengrove Golf Course, at the time just off Shottendane Road, close to the AA battery there, and the rest in a field by Vincent Farm close to Manston. It was the first enemy aircraft to crash on English soil. All three of the German airmen, 22 year old pilot Unteroffizier Heinrich Schildt, observer Oberleutnant Eckhardt Fulda and gunner Vizfeldwebel Ernst Eikelkamp were killed instantly.

Even though luck seemed to have favoured Brandon given the amount of enemy gunfire towards him, his aircraft had been hit in its No.6 cylinder. He was forced to land, but reportedly after claiming his victory, he took off in another Camel, B3923 “Springbok” and set back off in pursuit of the formation over the North Sea until he ran out of ammunition. He fired around 300 rounds towards one aircraft that had split from the formation. “Springbok” had only been delivered to Manston ten days earlier. When he landed a neat bullet hole was found in one of his propeller blades. The aircraft must also have had further damage as three days later, it was considered bad enough to order it to be scrapped.

How does the HSD downloader works? Is there any way to get the skins that are at the HSD library without installing the app?

I'm also finishing my updated 2022 SeaW0lf skin and my intention was to post here at the FC community. Does people with the HSD can upload my skin separately or they are bound / stuck to whatever is at the HSD library?

That along with https://discord.gg/xMnX477W are the best places to ask questions about HSD. There are also videos on YouTube for guides.

I do not believe that your able to download the skins that are uploaded onto HSD through another method (would defeat the point). That is unless the artist gives you another method to download of course. So that means no for the skins that I’ve made as HSD is your sole choice.

HSD is superior to the old methods, able to see if you already have downloaded them, automatic installation of downloaded skins, easier upload process for artists, informs you of updates to skins each time you run the program, better searching and filtering of skins. And more that I cannot think of off the top of my head.

I’m not sure I understand the last question.

If I post my skin in a regular post, people who use HSD can install my skin via regular DDS file? Because the app might take over the skin folder, preventing you from pasting a DDS file into it.

HSD users can also download and chuck skins into the folders as before. The skins that are unknown to HSD are not going to be booted out by the program. They might get overwrited if they share the same file name as one in HSD though?

Cool, that's good to know. Thanks a lot.

I liked several skins in this thread, but I'm not sure I want to install the app or submit my skin. I might try the app and see if I can copy some of the skins. I do have some folders with the skins that I like or think are important and I just copy and paste them every time I reinstall Il-2. I think it is easier. But I don't know the app. Maybe it is a keeper. I'll see.

Thanks again.

WORK IN PROGRESS 26/04/2022

Just figured would show some works in progress I've got going on. I've started work on some Triplanes in preparation for when the template gets released. The screenshots here are quite WIP and the markings are just painted over the top of the official skins at the moment, so bare that in mind. The colours for may have to be tweaked depending on how the template effects the sub-layers, and I intend on changing the dope colour. But doing the markings before hand should save me some time when the template finally gets out.

This one is going to be N5427 during it's time at 1 Squadron RNAS. It had just the single Vickers installation and was a Sopwith built machine. Joined them not too long after 1 Squadron was formed from A Squadron 1 Wing in December 1916 and left in May the next year. Just the one combat claim listed for sending a one seater out of control near Fresnoy by Forster Maynard in April.

This one is going to be N534 during it's time at 1 Squadron RNAS. It had the twin Vickers installation and was a Clayton Shuttleworth built machine. The markings are a bit weird in that does not really fit with the known scheme for 1 Squadrons machines and going to trust a couple of different sources that this is does indeed show a Triplane at 1 Squadron. It spent late July to September in the squadron and gained three combat claims during that time with three different pilots (Forster Maynard, Richard Minifie and Roderick Dallas).

This one is probably quite well known. N533 was the third and final Triplane that Raymond Collishaw used while he was at 10 Squadron RNAS. It's another Clayton Shuttleworth machine fitted with the twin-vickers armament. It spent about only a month with 10 Squadron before being sent back to the depot.

Took a bit longer than expected, sorting out texture issues, tweaking the dope colours to match my other aircraft, and some job applications stuff taking up some time. But anyway the three works in progress that I showed last month for the Triplane have now been finished and uploaded onto HSD. I've given each one both a PC10 and PC12 variant just as I've done with the Camels, basically for the same reason also, because Wing Nuts recommends either.

SKINS ADDED 15/06/2022

Just a couple more Triplanes for 1 Squadron, these being later ones, showing examples of the squadrons aircraft from after "squadron markings" were allocated to the RNAS's squadrons on August 26th. As with the other historical Triplanes I've given the choice between PC10 and PC12 dope and they should be available for download once the HSD team have processed them.
