Sublime Posted February 24, 2020 Posted February 24, 2020 Ok. With the P51 a real sweet spot seems to be 83% or IIRC 2700 RPM. I usually dont even take her to combat mode and can fly in continous an entire sortie. However with the P38 and Allison engines I wonder. Yes yes Ive read the specs but I want forum advice. On the P38 whats a good rpm for the fastest speed? Im not worried about crusing settings etc. I just do know in my non scientific mind that somehow less rpms means more speed after a certain pt. Dont know why. Doesnt matter. I just wanna know optimal RPMs. Same with the Tempest.. i tend to ride her a little hard. She can run at combat mode such a ridiculously long time I basically edge both rpm and throttle as high as I can without going to ER mode. Now... is a lower RPM better im that case actually? Finally o/t but the P47 intercoolers. My feeble brain can process the La5 ones. Open. Lets air in. The P47s are on the side and I dont get it lol. So I set em at 50 so theyre flush and dont add drag and leave them. Is this acceptable (it works but could I be getting a lot more speed?) This may sound dumb and perhaps it is. However Ill still ask considering I was rocking around a p47 with no interlocked controls or turbo settings for a month until I found out you could do so and gained about 50 mph lol. Thx.
69th_Bazzer Posted February 24, 2020 Posted February 24, 2020 P-38 I recommend dropping to 2300-2400 rpm in level flight above 225 mph ias. You won't accelerate as quickly, so that's why don't drop the rpm until you are above about 225. With rpm that low, you can push all the way up to 55-56 manifold pressure. This will put you in combat mode but you can run it indefinitely, and will get you the fastest possible speed in level flight. Tempest I run 100% rpm all the time. Anything lower is slower in my experience. No idea on the P-47, I won't touch her until the damage model is fixed. 1
Megalax Posted February 24, 2020 Posted February 24, 2020 Tempest is 3150 RPM for continuous flight. 3700 for all other ranges of flight. I recommend you give this download a try. All the info is on the cockpit in front of you when you fly. 1

I appreciate it but prob one is I cannot for the life of me seem to get the cockpit photos to work. Second its not hard going to another plane to quickly check the spec sheet and it comes back to me. What the spec sheet will not tell you however is like what the 2nd post put. Or for example in the P51 going above 82 or 83% rpm really doesnt do much for speed. You get a burst of speed acceleration wise then it doesnt really help Edited February 25, 2020 by Sublime
