Is the Tempest Gunsight Reticle position correct?

I'm wondering why I have to sit so high in the Tempest's cockpit for the reticle to come into view? 

This is especially odd as the projector lens seems to be angled forward instead of level (see real cockpit image attached), so in theory we should see the reticle appear much higher up the front screen than it is. 

 

When looking from the outside, side view it seems impossible for the projected image to appear where it does?
