Does it make a difference ?

If you are an Entente pilot, does it make much difference if your opponent is a Fokker d VII or VIIf ?

Now, obviously, the "f" is a much more capable aircraft than the vanilla VII, but if you absolutely knew that you were just fighting against the plain VII would your whole philosophy change as to the prospects and chances in a dogfight ?  If on the otherhand you are facing the possibility of squaring off against either the plain VII or the "f", you just can't tell which , do you just assume it's probably an "f" and immediately put yourself at a moral disadvantage and therefore miss opportunities that might present themselves if you knew, with absolute certainty, that it was just a plain VII ?

What I'm getting at is, is every fight with a D VII actually a fight with a D VIIf regardless, even if only in the heads of the Entente pilots, do Entente pilots set themselves up for faliure even before the first shot is fired ?

I suppose it's maybe too much of a philisophical question to really get a good answer to as it questions what players are actually thinking as they enter into a dogfight, i'm sure as hell that i don't usually know whats going through my noggin at the best of times (my wife usually has to tell me).

What is really the difference? Different motor or what?

Good post! In our squadron, we always call the DVII as "f" and threat them as they were with BMW's :) In RoF times, you could hear the difference between the engines and "knew" what skins are for which model. On a higher altitude you can see the difference very quickly, on lower, below 1000 meters, both are more similar speaking of top speed or handling. So, yes, I see the D.VII and I am thinking of it as of "F".

No difference if their above you, Problem is if you have 1 more is likely to be close.

This.

RoF is a very different game when it comes to two-seaters, but the regular D.VII and D.VIIF were both equally worthless in an angles fight with a Lewis turret, regardless of the two-seater which the turret was attached to. I recall the F being particularly susceptible to the F.E.2b's twin Lewis, exactly because of its low speed and smaller turn radius, compared to the F's high speed and higher turn rate. In a more conventional angles fight with a Camel, both D.VIIs suffer similarly, though the F has more options. What the F is truly superb at, is climbing when out of combat. It's also plain faster than the Camel, as one of only two Central planes — the other being the Pfalz D.XII(f). All the other 1918 Entente planes it can easily outmaneuver, with the exception of the Bristol Fighter — but that has more to do with the lethality of the gunner, or lack thereof.
