Beebop Posted February 18, 2020 Posted February 18, 2020 (edited) I've looked around and not found anything so far on the Forums that addresses this particular issue. Riddle me this.... Lately when playing Great Battles and especially when using the Mission Editor I hear the Windows tones of system notification. In game suddenly two cursors appear on screen and when I try to exit the game one does nothing, like it's a ghost. I have to figure out which one works and this behavior continues until I am out of the game. When I get back to the desktop I only have the one cursor. In the Mission Editor I hear the tones, sometimes several in a row like several notifications are happening in quick succession, then the mouse will disappear or freeze, then more tones and the cursor is released then another tone and no cursor at all. I cannot exit the game. I open the Task Manager using keyboard shortcuts and select the exe but cannot access the 'end Task' button so my only option is to do a hard reboot. Obviously anything I didn't save in the ME before this happens is lost. Mouse is a Microsoft Standard Intellimouse connected via USB port next to the keyboard PS2 port. There are two USB ports there and I have tried both. I have unplugged and re-plugged in the mouse several times (with computer off) to ensure snug fit. So... I went into Device Manager and checked my mouse and USB ports. Device Manager says everything is working properly. I unchecked the box in mouse and USB Properties that says 'Allow computer to turn off this device to save power' After unchecking the boxes and restarting it happens again when I open the ME or start the game. I tried updating the mouse driver and was successful although after a while it satrted happening again. With the USB hubs when I asked to 'Update Drivers' I received this message, "The best drivers for this device are already installed". I uninstalled all the drivers for the mouse and USB's and restarted letting Window reinstall the appropriate drivers. It keeps happening. I have tried disconnecting the computer from the wall power for several minutes. It restarts with the mouse but after a while the tones happen and presto, no mouse. Norton and Malwarebytes find no virus's during scans. I do not surf porn or torrent sites. If after a restart if I don't play GB or use the ME I have no problems. I don't play other games so cannot say if it's a general gaming issue. This problem doesn't rear it's ugly head in other programs or applications, just GB. But sometimes it does it without previously opening the game or ME and the message appears "USB Device not recognized: One of the devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned and windows does not recognize it." Usually at that point I have no mouse cursor and a hard reboot is the only way to get it back. Meanwhile Windows says everything is "working properly" and that I have the "best driver is installed". Has this happened to anyone else and if solved, how did you do it? I really don't want to go to a "professional" to try and get it fixed, I would rather do it myself and learn something. System Info; CPU: AMD Ryzen 7, 1700. 8 Cores and 16 threads. 3.19GHz adaptive up to 3.7 GHz. GPU: Sapphire RX 580 w/8Gb DDR 5. Mobo: AMD AB350 Gaming K4. Memory: 16Gb DDR 3. Beebop Posted February 19, 2020 Author Posted February 19, 2020 Well it's been almost two days since I posted and everything is back to "normal". I wish I could say I solved it and here's what I did but in truth it seemed to have solved itself. Here's how that happened.... After posting this my mouse again went away. After careful thought and the fact that all reports from Windows said everything was fine, I came to the conclusion that possibly, after 5 years of hard use, my mouse was dying. I went ahead and shut down the computer using the case button, unplugged the mouse and went to be. I planned to go out the next morning and buy a cheap mouse thinking that if it wasn't really the mouse why spend $50USD on another M$ Intellimouse. All I needed to do was confirm that the USB Ports working and the drivers worked. If they did with the cheapo mouse then a new Intellimouse would be in order. If it didn't 'fix' the issue then I had some other problem, not the mouse. So the next morning after breakfast I deiced that before getting the new mouse it would be a good time to do some housekeeping around my computer. When I picked up the keyboard th computer turned on. that was odd I thought because I had turned it off with the power switch. well since the computer was started I decided to plug the mouse back in and see if any responses had come through. When I plugged in the mouse I got the familiar notification tone and a popup said it was installing the driver s for my new USB device. Odd I thought because I hadn't recently uninstalled them. A few seconds later another notification popped up say my Microsoft Intellimouse was configured and ready for use. ??? So I came here and found Niiranen-VR's response. I continued surfing expecting a freeze-up at any time but 30 minutes later it hadn't happened. I then decided that since the problem manifested itself so often in the ME I opened it up, found a test mission and started adding elements. 45 minutes later it still hadn't crashed. As of today I have had no problems. So what did I do? I have not a clue. I had turned off the computer before, tried uninstalling and reinstalling drivers, ran multiple scans for virus/malware with no change it what happened. Windows. It used to be a stable piece of software but in my opinion it has become an unstable nearly useless piece of bloatware. it's ONLY saving grace is it plays IL-2 better than any other OS. As far as I'm concerned, the minute I can get an OS that plays IL-2 without excessive tweaking and 'British Sports Car Maintenance" (daily tweaking of little things) I will jumt ship like a rat from a sinking boat. So, everything's OK, at least for the moment. Sorry I couldn't say to others having similar issues "here's what I did and it worked". Just thought I would update anyone interested. Good luck with your problem Niiranen-VR and I hope you can resolve it. Be sure to post and let us know what you did (or as in my case didn't do) to fix it. I'm sure it will help someone else.
