Questions about Historic Skins

Anyone know when a Luftwaffe pilot was allowed to paint his plane in a personalized way. It was based on numbers of demolitions, years of fighting, graduation or if it was considered an AS.

I ask, because in the luftwaffe there are hundreds of skins or camouflages that are from famous squads but some well-known pilots had their own camouflage paintings and they were yes historical.

A LOT of the colours were pretty standard and the 'personalisation'  tended to be in the form of killmarks on the tails and the ID of the actual wing and flight group insignia like the 'R' in a shield of JG2 Richtofen on the cowling. They weren't so active as, say, the Americans with their Noseart.

Similar to how Luftwaffe pilots were promoted, the number of kills, recognition and awards carried special privileges like getting to pick your own plane and personalize it. If you had a knights cross, you were one of the elite.

 

There was not a lot of “Nose art” though. It was all about business and if you were a long term experten, you probably changed or upgraded your “machine” pretty often. There was no end of tour at 100 missions.
