Mysticpuma Posted February 14, 2020 Posted February 14, 2020 So I have Track IR 4 and have used it for years. Around 2-years-ago I bought an Oculus DK2 and it really made me excited about the future of simming. Having sat and played in BoX, DCS and Project Cars....there really is nothing like it to make a player feel like they are in the environment. So step forward to now, Oculus no longer support DK2 (although it does work with a bit of effort in the games mentioned), so now I am looking at getting a fully working VR headset. Thing is, there's loads of the buggers and no matter what videos I watch I still see a lot of pixels/grain and I am just wondering what players feelings are of the headet they use, the detail that is lost or missing and finally is there any headset on the horizon that looks like being amazing while keeping detail in the visuals? Thanks for any input, cheers, Mysticpuma
Alonzo Posted February 14, 2020 Posted February 14, 2020 Reasonably cheap, user friendly, will work reasonably well on a marginally-specced PC, not very adjustable, not good if you have large or small IPD: Oculus Rift S Amazing build quality, best in class tracking, amazing audio, very adjustable, expensive: Valve Index Retina-display VR, needs an appropriate PC to match: HP Reverb Super wide, needs expertise in tinkering with software, customer support more difficult, amazing visuals: Pimax Cheap and not at all bad: Odyssey+ Personally, if I could convince myself that money is no object, I would buy a top-of-the-line Pimax 8KX headset, plus the Valve tracking and controllers kit for it, and upgrade to the NVidia 3000-series GPUs when they come out. But then I already have a 5ghz 8086K to power all that stuff. If someone said to me "which VR headset?" and "I'm not giving you more details" I would say Rift S every time, because it's a good all rounder. It's what I have currently. But there are better headsets.
dburne Posted February 14, 2020 Posted February 14, 2020 (edited) Been loving my Rift S since getting it last May. Have been using it daily. Rock solid device with very little muss or fuss. Tracking is fantastic. I probably spend around 15-20 hours a week in VR. With my rig and Rift S, I can run IL-2 pretty much maxed out on graphics and get good performance - and it looks great. Issues: Poor audio strap - I use earbuds plugged into the Rift S headphone jack, sound through them is great. Mic - on mine at least the Mic is iffy, oftentimes dropping out during the game. Does not seem to be prevalent though, so I may just be one of a few with this issue. I got my Rift S on release, so it was an early one. I use a desktop USB Mic. Any device you get today, will likely blow away that DK2 in comparison. You can get a bit of overview on what folks here are using in this thread. Edited February 14, 2020 by dburne
SCG_motoadve Posted February 14, 2020 Posted February 14, 2020 Had the Oculus Rift , was good, reliable, comfortable, cheap, but low resolution. Then bought the Vive, and returned it after two weeks, heavy uncomfortable and horrible sweet spot, plus very expensive. Then got the Odyssey +, very good headset, better resolution than the previous ones, price not bad. Ordered the Pimax in October 2018, and by March 2019 they would not reply my e mails of when will it ship, and after lots of difficulties got a refund, difficult company to deal with and would not trust it too much as customer service was bad,its expensive too And now have the HP Reverb, resolution is much better than all the others VR headsets I have had before, my favorite for sure, sweetspot its ok, but would be better if a bit bigger, price is not bad.

Just yesterday I convinced two people to get a rift S vs the other better headsets. I simply feel like the cost isn't worth it because I have a feeling some better stuff will be coming late this year early next year. Edited February 14, 2020 by WIS-Redcoat
[CPT]Crunch Posted February 15, 2020 Posted February 15, 2020 I'm going to wait for a while, some interesting stuff inbound soon. Panisonic Some interesting things going there for it, appears they've upped the ante in packing pixels into smaller screens.

J5_HellCat_ Posted February 15, 2020 Posted February 15, 2020 Another vote for the Reverb ....great resolution ...My IPD is 64 and I have a good sweet spot .... My Path Lenovo > Odyssey > Reverb Good luck in your search.

It was a good improvement over the DK1, specially the spatial positioning. I still keep it in the box as an old great device. But I had many wow waves after the DK2. The first was with the RiftCV1, it improved many things, specially the ergonomics and lens quality. I had another wow with FOV of the Pimax5K+, it was so great. Then, another wow with the visual clarity and large sweet spot of the Index. Then, another wow with the superresolution of the Reverb. And finally, and surprisingly, another wow about the comfort of the Rift-S. More info here:
