Things that go bump in the VR

I wonder if there is, ironically, more of a chance of bumping into other aircraft during a swirling dogfight when using VR ?

When two, or more, aircraft are In a dogfight the assumption is that that involves most, if not all of the pilots attention, and most often it probably does, but does the ability to easily look around, to check SA, and still retain a sense of 3D special awareness mean that VR pilots might have the luxury of looking around more and potentially missing the most obvious danger, staring at you, quite literally, in the face. Or, on the other hand, does the murky view and restricted FoV mean that VR pilots have the advantages of better spatial awareness cancelled out, if for no other reason than the extra physical effort needed to look around ?

I ask because, it may not always be obvious to non VR players or indeed anyone else, that, even if we’re in an all teeth and fur dogfight, my direct adversary my not be the only thing I’m concentrating on or looking at just before a coming together, as it were.

When playing, using TrackIR or the old “hat” system I tended to ignore the wider world, my little brain would struggle to adjust to concentrating on my opponent and also constant view changes that didn’t actually relate to where my head was pointing.  it was easier to just risk it as ultimately there was no real risk if I was shot down, no box or cage awaited. With VR I try to keep a better overview and tag on other players in the immediate area.  It probably helps avoid some bumps but at the same time I have found myself taken unawares, on a couple of occasions, from the front, because I was looking elsewhere and maybe only saw the real danger to late to avoid.

When I was flying in VR, definitely I could fly much closer to the enemy and stay few meters away , not so much in 2D.

Depth perception is definitely better no doubt.

This is but one example of why by today’s technology it really is as real as it gets while sitting at your desk. I’ve noticed this too on the few occasions I’ve gone back to 4K 2D flying (although be it to just get some new screenshots for my desktop).
