From some of my observations, it appears to be 10 cubic kilometers from the center point of the object/airfield.  Looking at it top-down, there would be 4 cubes oriented in a square so that the common interior corner would be the center point of the object.   I would have guessed that it was a "dome" with a 10km radius, but that would allow planes at high altitude to trigger the warning much later the higher they went.   I'm pretty sure the trigger distance is the same regardless of altitude.

so thats almost 2 grids each way . this gives the marauding bandit 2 mn at 450 km hr time to find you if he guesses which way you are going if he is at the limit of the border . You cannot see beyond 1and half grid i think so if i dont spot him before attacking and he is not there i have to be lucky enough and chose an exit which he thinks you wont use . I have a busy body online who always finds me on my way to target or back to base even using decoy routes . I am trying to avoid alerting targets on my way to my target which would obviously give me away and indicate where i'm heading .
