Commanding AI Gunners in QMB

Hey all, 

 

I was playing around in QMB trying to command the gunner to engage targets and could use some help understanding how the commands are supposed to be used. The first target I issued a command to engage was at about 1km, the gunner immediately turned towards it and engaged the target precisely. I next picked was 2km out and the gunner snapped his gun on target, but wouldnt fire. I assume this is due to range so i picked a closer target, 500m out. I issued the command to engage and the gunner did nothing, he continued to hold the turret pointing at the target at 2km. I issued a bunch of other commands trying to get the gunner to fire on the 500m target, but nothing happened. Eventually I set the crew to engage targets at will. The gunner immediately snapped his gun onto the 500m target, but didnt fire. I ordered him to engage the 500m target, nothing. order him to fire, nothing. I think i'm missing something here for how to use the orders so any help is appreciated.
