PE-2 above 7,000 meters?

Normal the PE-2 is a tactical bomber not destined to go and bombard cities! But an empty PE-2 prototype should reach 28.870 ft.

 The recon flights conducted by Pe-2's along the Finnish southern coast were intercepted at altitudes of 7-8km. Bombing Pe-2's came in at a considerably lower altitude, around 3-5km with escorts staggered above them.

It seems that the PE-2 normal level bombing and recon flight altitude is 5000m  in case of dive bombing it colud has low has 3000m with 3 group of escort fighters one above one medium altitude and one at the dive recover altitude. (source =[Osprey] - [Combat Aircraft 096] - Pe 2 Guards Units of World War 2).

After trying some MP over the last week, it seems anything over 2000 metres is high enough to keep you out of harms way.  All the fighter types seem to be under the clouds and don't venture very high at all..

Depends on which engine we have modelled now.This early series had M105R/RA engines.They had better high altitude performance then M105PF which were specially tuned for low-to-middle altitudes performance.

M105PF was introduced wit 179th series.(due to unification of engine production only PF version was produced since then) So flying anywhere higher then 4k is not good idea,you will lose lot of power.

Thanks for sharing this information! Both altitudes seem fairly high for bombing, do you happen to know whether they did also low level bombing runs with Pe-2s?

  Pe-2's used mostly dive bombing against Kotka harbour. Other types did level bombing, like the Pe-8 shot down over Helsinki by the German night fighter unit stationed there.

Personally the Lagg-3 goes to 8300m in altitude no much more in twenty minutes:

Yes they did and also night intruders missions. But the most common where the dive tactical ground support missions. Do not forget there was a version of the PE-2 with sometime externals extra paper fuel tanks for recon missions.
