Video by Froogle - F-18 and Persian Gulf.

I finally pre-ordered this morning to grab them while still on sale.

I have the Hornet on pre order but not the map (yet) How does DCS handle VR?

Download it and give it a go with the free modules, it really depends on the hardware and settings.

Posted

What I meant was, how does DCS compare to BoX with VR.

Posted

Can anyone confirm what size (GB) the base download is for DCS World 2.5?

The only module I have is Flaming Cliffs 3 bought in a sale a few months back.

I started the download process a few days ago and was horrified to see 42GB listed. Immediately cancelled it.

If BOS/BOM/BOK + extra skins and missions comes to 22GB how and why is DCS (without most of the add-on modules/maps) SO big?

Not sure what you mean. If you are talking about the technical aspects of it, DCS has far better VR support than BoX but also has higher system requirements for it. Specifically, DCS allows for using the Rift's touch controllers to interact with the cockpit. It also has built in super sampling adjustments and a manual IPD override.

Can't confirm base download size but with NTTR and most of the aircraft, it comes out to 86GB. The reason for the difference in size is the graphics. DCS uses 4k textures on everything and much higher polygon count on most 3d models. The result is a much prettier game, but it is a big download and eats a lot of SSD space. I think the NTTR map itself is around 25GB.

I find DCS to be a little more demanding in VR than BoX.

However I am mainly flying the Normandy map in DCS with the Spit, and it I believe is more demanding than the others.

Can't wait for the Hornet although we have the A+ version, not the C wich is going to be modeled.

Looks like it will come with an Spanish skin too!

I have already prepurchased. I just hope we can get it this week or next week. I am not interested in the map now.

BTW they forgot to put the identification numbers on nose and tail

So far, they had a notice "not Steam compatible", but looking now (just bought the F18 and the persian Gulf Map) there is no such warning anymore... maybe now it works.

From todays Newsletter:

Persian Gulf will be released in 23rd

F-18 will be released on 30th of May

Think there are still a few issues left they wanna iron out before releasing it into EA

I have both DCS World latest release with WW2 Assets and Normandy map and the total is 55.8 Gb.

To me DCS graphics are great but a memory hog. I haven't played for a while as I find IL2 more user friendly and less demanding overall.

Posted

Well IL-2 will always remain my main love , but I will be making at least some time to learn to fly this plane.

Really looking forward to climbing into that cockpit.

I sure have some questions I'd like to ask Matt Wagner.

Q&A is fairly interesting. It seems there will be coming a new Flaming Cliffs with new machines this year. This made me think if a ww2 version of FC wouldnt be possible, as that would cut the workload while providing so necessary content.

afaik there was some talk on plans about creating WW2 birds on FC level.

Dont have a link at hand though atm

Plans are only plans. I guess it would be nice if opportunity appeared and one could ask Matt about this possibility. Considering those are simpler aircraft than FA-18, F-16 or A-10 I think building them to a level of FC fidelity would not be a great loss in terms of detail, but price decrease and possibility to release more machines would attract more users to fly Normandy.

Hmm... DCS FC WW2... Flaming Cliffs of Dover?

Wouldn't a FCWW2 just be the same idea as BoX anyway?

It was in the Q&A with Nick Grey:

https://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=207133

Q. Will we see survey modules again like FC3 for the casual simmer and especially 'The Century Series' Surely classic air frames are a market seller?

A. FC4 with four more aircraft
Flying Legends pack with 8 -12 aircraft …. ?

Hard to say. FC3 planes have automated engine restarts and other such features. So if it were a direct adaption to WW2 planes, the highest realism setting would be similar auto engine management in BoX. So no over-reving engines, no mixture, no superchargers and so on. It would all be automated with no option for manual control. But I'm not sure they'll go that route nor am I convinced it will even happen. FC4 with modern-ish planes seems fairly likely though.

Posted

I really don't see DCS ever getting away from the full realism high fidelity planes now going forward , but who knows.

That is certainly their niche, and apparently is successful for them.

As far as I'm aware FC is one of the most popular products they are selling for a long time. And Matt admitted in the stream that it is a good entry level product for those who are new to a flight sim hobby.

I'm sure a reasonable middle ground could be found. Since those aircraft do not have any displays, complicated systems and stuff like that, more detail could be given to ww2 warbirds.

I guess I will have to take advantage of a new Q&A thread and ask Nick Grey further.

S!

Just bought WW2 module and Assets along with the Mig-15bis. Have to start flying DCS again after my new rig is ready.

=362nd_FS=Hiromachi

What did you buy - P-51, 109 or 190 ?

Also, once you start flying I hope you can give some input how Vega performs in DCS. I'm curious of AMDs top GPUs performance and behavior in it.

The map is gorgeous. A lot of stuf is not done yet, but the geography and local climate, definitely are going to make fighting challenging.

I think DCS has now the best graphics engine in the flight sim world.
