I'm a bit of a DCS noob. Had it for ages just never really played it. Set up my P51 controls last night. still need to bind the map somewhere, not even figured out how to open it yet, and also to figure out how comms works with ATC etc. Also hoping to try one of the online servers for WWII combat.

Assign Kneeboard toggle to a button, also next page and previous page, and mark position.

Good to know! I always bring up the F10 map in DCS...not sure if that's the right map or not. I'll try the knee board button thanks. What do the other buttons you mentioned do?

Unfortunately for reason or another some systems related to the EE Lightning remain classified by the British MoD, almost 60 years after its introduction!

That generation of interceptors is really amazing. We already have the MiG-21 and a Mirage III is planned, all that's missing is the Starfighter and Lightning to complete the "manned missile" collection.

This might help (but probably wont) https://www.amazon.co.uk/English-Electric-BAC-Lightning-Manual/dp/0857337688/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1518467364&sr=1-1&keywords=haynes+lightning+manual

Is there a way to turn up the night lighting level (city and airport) in the Nevada map? I find it very dim. II's like everyone is using 10 watt bulbs.

Thanks. :)

unfortunately, that is a technical result of the way they use shaders and saturation now. You can partly improve that by switching between defered shading and HDR in the graphic settings. Onle one can be active at a time, so just click HDR and restart. HDR works ok for nevada but is ugly in caucasus.. I tend to switch between the settings for the map, it sucks.

That's a serious answer! Thank you, I'll try it out.

Worked like a charm! Thank you. :drinks:

I love those big concrete airfields with lots of lights and they look infinitely better with that tweak. Landed at Groom and enjoyed a lovely taxi to parking with the proper night lighting.

Hi Guys,

Have any of you had problems with activating the Mig-21 again? I installed DCS 2,5 and i get activation errors with the Mig.

Thnx

Working fine on my end, Martijn. Is this the first time you've installed DCS? What errors are showing up?

Never had a problem activating the MiG-21, I have had issues with it wanting me to re-activate it with nearly every patch, but that hasn't happened in months.

I've really loved flying the p51, over the last few days in DCS. VR performs like a champ. So smooth.

I've decided to buy the normandy map, asset pack and spit in a few days time. I am really struggling though to figure out how to communicate with ATC and ground crews. Control set up says "\" "but it doesnt seem to do anything in VR. I usually tune my radio to channel A

Normandy is gorgeous, be aware though especially in VR it is a bit of a performance hog.

Hi Lucas,

I found out what the problem was.

I could solve it by deleting the Leatherneck Mig-21 registry and reactivating it again.

Thnx

Dang, Zebra. Did you get a "cease and desist" from ED's lawyer or something?

lol... he's been nerfed!

Pity, those videos were pretty funny. Don't think they really showed DCS in a bad light either, every game has its glitches and some are fairly amusing.

Thank you, I will try to turn it off, because I found it also not quite well

I bought Normandy, the asset pack and the spit with epsom campaign at the weekend.

First, I really hate the spit. The FM is awful, almost makes me feel ill in VR because it seems to float about all over the place in a manner that my brain does not expect. I found it very difficult while strafing ground targets to get the sight near target. All controls seemed overly sensitive.

Also disappointed with the mission generator. I had hoped that the ww2 asset pack would enable me to generate ww2 style quick missions. I actually think the quick mission generator is quite an impressive feature, makes the game feel very alive seeing all the other units go about their business, but me in a p51 vs SU27's ? I love a challenge but would love a bit of customisation.

Yes the Spit is certainly different , not such an easy beast to tame. I have found the same thing with it, still like to fly it though. It is quite sensitive to control inputs.

I too was disappointed in the quick mission generator, I tried to set up a dogfight in my Spit but found I was fighting modern jets. Guess one has to use the ME to get around that, so no quick mission generating for me.

I just read that the new DCS Harrier has a DRM requirement that it be able to phone home over the net at least every three days or it won't work offline.

That's some mighty skanky BS if it's true.

Is piracy a big problem then ? I prefer to have most of my games on steam, and only really play from home, so i'm pretty much always online anyway, but I know its more difficult for people in remote areas

They are eventually migrating everything to that method.

Piracy may be a problem, but the solution is not to abrogate ownership of things you pay for. It seems that in order to protect the private property of the person selling, it must be the case that the person buying does not get to enjoy his own private property.

In short, "We had to destroy the village in order to save it".

Strange, I had no such feeling trying it out in my old rig.... What Joystick do you got?

It is quite sensitive to control inputs.

Sorry saw this afterward, it might be it, I had some views like this when people talked about planes acting like this in this sim. I simply did not recognize the description. I got a slightly different control system than most people, I have to increase sensitivity on most planes in order to make fast enough turns.

I think Spit might be a bit more unstable than it suppose to be, it is a nimble aircraft and as such will be sensitive in control and weather

LOL I am not fond of these things, but protecting their work is pretty essential in order to stay in busyness . I was not happy for ROF and its online login system in order to play the game, I believed it would not last, but it did. I think we got nothing to say, they bloddy well do what they like , no matter what way we respond to it.

I bought the Harrier , another untested and un-flown plane. :(

Got to cut down on rubbish investments

its a saitek x55 hotas. I can fly the spit reasonably ok for standard take off, travel and landing. The problem is with precision, getting the sight on a static ground target seems far more difficult than it should be. Especially when compared with a p51 for example.

VR kind of enhances your sensation of movement and momentum, and there definitely seems to be something off about how the spits handling that makes it an uncomfortable VR experience for me.

OK sorry, I just had some fun flight with it, no shooting. The P 511 was a better gun-platform than the Spit , but I understand your problem lies beyond not a good weapon platform. I personally have huge problems landing it, I do not think I have manage to do that

Try using curves - the Spit had low stick forces as far as I know so ist reacts pretty harsh to inputs.

The X55 isnt the best stick either - used to use one but switched to a FFB2 with which the Spit flies pretty nicely and also precise in DCS.

If I am not wrong there were already discussions regarding this issue in the DCS forums

Is it really that big of a deal? That's the least invasive form of DRM I know of and I'm glad they are moving from starforce to that model. It's the same model both Steam and BoX use. Certainly beats the hell out of the old days where we had to stick in a disk to confirm we actually owned it. Probably works better at slowing pirates too. ;)

Steam and BOX both need to phone home every three-days or they stop working?

Or did I misread your meaning?

BOX needs to phone home every time unless you only use quick missions and scripted campaigns. In other words, it becomes almost a "demo". It's the least invasive type of DRM since most of the time you can just turn on a mobile hotspot for a minute until the login is complete then play offline happily.

Posted

I don't mean to argue with you, but if you can use the QMB and scripted campaign and FMB, that does make it a bit more than a demo.

But the DCS F-18 DRM, that simply doesn't allow you to use the product at all unless you connect every three-days, that strikes me as skanky.

Posted

Then imagine when the new Career comes out, and imagine yourself only wishing to play the Career. Are you still sure it's more than a demo?

Regarding DCS, I simply get an "Authorization expired" message; I can't use multiplayer, but that's it, everything works just as before.

At any rate, what Lucas suggested is an effective solution. I can imagine the troubles when updates are released, though.

The new DRM is still being worked out. There also will be an offline mode, but no ETA yet.

Steam has to phone home periodically, not sure on exact timing since I pretty much always have an internet connection. I think I've heard once per week but I really can't say, all I know is it does need to phone home at some point. BoX will require a more or less constant internet connection once the new career mode is added as the missions are all generated server side (like in RoF).
