...you know, this keeps happening to me.

This is probably the 3rd time.

I start thinking "well maybe this aircraft, or that aircraft, hey that looks nice...or maybe I could have fun with this or that..."

Then I suddenly remember their petty and petulant practice of banning people from their forum based on they say on other forums, and I remember that I vowed never to spend another penny on their product again no matter

what they come up with.

Dammit.

I am exactly the same. I was interested in the harrier but cannot bring myself to giving ED any more of my money. I cannot support a company that treats its customers the way they do. Wheather its their modderators or their third parties charging full price for a product that lack so manny important features for years.

I did take the P51 out for a spin recently and was pleasantly surprised by the improved performance in the Normandy map. I was also gobsmacked by the water on that map. Its really, really impressively done i have to admit. Kudos to them for that. If they could actually get their sh1t together and start treating their customers with respect i could buy the harrier in the future. But i dont see that happening for a long time yet.

...and jump on Korea before 777 trounces them there as well.

With the speed at which DCS develops and releases content, they'd need to make that decision yesterday.I keep thinking about that MiG-15.

It looks soooo nice.

If i could i would give you the mig. Seriously. I never fly it. Its a good module, the cockpit is outstanding, but there's just nothing for it or the sabre. For me the sabre and migs war was korea. I dont understand how they could release those 2 iconic aircraft and not a korean map. I was misguided in thinking there must be a map on the way after those 2 releases.

Isn't the MiGs vs Sabers map Nevada? That's where the campaign is based.

I used to enjoy a what if cold war style B52 interception in the Mig-21bis over the Caucasus. Hopefully I can again when 2.5 comes.

What exactly is the point of the "deffered shading"? It looks terrible. Is it a performance helper? I dont quite, or rather totally dont, understand its point. I cant see a thing in Nevada and the cockpits are white in Normandy. What is its purpose?

It IS nice.  I've had it for awhile but only just got into it the past couple weeks.  There is a Korea server in DCS 1.5 right now for Sabres & MiGs.  It's well put together, but still under construction.

MiG15 is a blast.

My inability to fly aside, here's my first online sortie with it:

Also learned that hypoxia is modeled pretty well in DCS!!!

Edit: Learned how to use the radio beacons after this.  Had only just learned how to turn on the engine and arm the guns.  The server has gone for a TAW approach with actual navigation and no more icons in the F10 map!

I've tried that, the cockpits are then too dark. I'm pretty happy with the regular shading. What is the point of he deferred? Serious question, i really want to know

Did you see this fix from ED? https://forums.eagle.ru/showpost.php?p=3322583&postcount=1

Sorry, that didn't answer your question.  It's their new method of shading/lighting in the 2.x system

Here as well.

I've been keen on the Viggen for ages and keep nearly picking up the Harrier, and I've had my eye on the F/A-18. But I can't bring myself to order any of them mainly because SiThSpAwN is such a ballbag.

So there's what, £150-ish that he's cost ED already, from me alone.

If I were in a third-party dev team I'd be kicking off as the actions of someone outside their company is damaging their own profits as well.

The regular shading is too washed out for me (the landscape / sky). The cockpit is OK, but I can set a mission for 12 noon blue skies and it looks like 6am overcast. Without HDR there is no sun (tiny white dot without rays). With HDR the sun blacks out the screen even if you come near to look at it. The other day I went outside to look at the sun and even if I look directly at it, my vision doesn't black out the slightest. If I look a little off the sun, the sky maintain the same bright blue color. So, for whatever reason they created this blinder effect, but it does not work for me and it is not realistic, especially because it hinders visibility even more, which is already lacking.

Deferred shading brings back some normality to the sky. I can set a mission for 12 noon and the sky does look like 12 noon. But the cockpit becomes extremely bright / with acid colors, and the ocean becomes muddy. The landscape got different as well, more acid / contrasted with the new patch. Not a good combination overall, but the sky is important for me and I can look at the sun without getting my sight dark. Although there is no sun glare, but I can live with that.

In general I think lightening in DCS is all over the place. They should have a solution with sun and glare -- like we have in BOX and works fine, it has a glare and pilots can use the sun to bounce someone -- and that's it. No blackening of the screen. To have all these different sun versions is a bit odd to be honest.

Loved the bit where you blacked out, then when you came back there was a bloody sabre just outside the cockpit!

I really don't think the issue is the toxic community or staff, and its pretty damned toxic as of late.

The biggest issue is the loss of direction. DCS has become this kinda random mishmash of modules/addons. Something that would be perfectly fine for FSX/P3D/XP etc, but DCS has a dedicated combat setting which is decidedly modern, but its now chocked full of all kinds of random fixed and rotary-wing assets from different eras tossed in with no discernible direction for any of it, minus of course WWII. Everything just feels so haphazard.

ED really needs to get the merge into 2.5 happening sooner rather than later. Community is just so fragmented now.

I really enjoy DCS , but I also have been taking a bit of a break from it for the last several weeks due mainly to performance issues in Normandy and VR. Their last update seems to have helped this some, but also am really waiting now for the merge to finally happen. Kind of tired of having three different installs on my gaming SSD.

Spending the vast bulk of my VR gaming time in BoS.

Merge needs to happen before I reinstall. Hopefully "soon". Be Sure.

A letter was posted on Eagle Dynamics' Facebook page, on 28 November. Here is part of it dealing with DCS WWII.

----------

An excerpt from "A letter from Eagle Dynamics" - 28 November 2017 (bold highlights added by me)

"Many of our new programmers and artists are responsible DCS World War II. They are separate from our main project (like the F/A-18C) developers, and they are not involved with the modern aircraft development efforts. Otherwise, it would not be practical/efficient to develop aircraft like the F/A-18C with staff split between projects. Also, DCS World War II is a great “school” for new programmers before they take on extremely complicated Modern Air Combat projects.

We could deliver modern, complicated aircraft faster than we and our 3rd parties are already doing, but growing a business needs more and more revenue to grow the team and make better products. We were very surprised to find that the investment vs. generated revenue has been excellent for the World War II aircraft. In fact, the P-51D Mustang has twice the cost effectiveness of the A-10C Warthog.

As you can see, DCS’s World War II series doesn’t compete with modern aircraft projects for development resources. In fact, it supports it!"

----------

SERIOUSLY?????

Let me break this down into plain English.

Dear DCS WWII Simmer,

We're producing content slowly because we're using the game to train new employees. When they get good enough, we take them off the project and put them on our modern sim. Hope you like paying for second rate work. By the way, we're never going to complete the project as promised on the Kickstarter page, because we're using the money we make off you to pay for more work to be done on our modern sim. The money you spend on DCS WWII will NEVER benefit you at all. Thanks for being our cash cow.

Signed,

Eagle Dynamics

I knew it was bad, but this is an outrage. I will never give them a single dollar of my money, even if I have to play 20 year old sims. But wait, I can speak with my wallet and purchase the entire IL-2 series instead, and have one huge sim covering both the Eastern and Western front of the European Theater. I don't have to play their game at all, ever. Fine by me.

Nothing exactly unusual about training new programmers in simpler projects. Il-2 are doing that with the U-2 and it makes complete sense, especially since in both simulators though the newcomers are programming it's still the same people making the quality assurance and publishing so you don't get to feel the difference.

There will always be SOME difference.  That's why they get "moved up" when they get better at what they do.  That's not even the main point, though.  Newer programmers/artists are going to be slower, which means all DCS WWII content will be released more slowly.  AND, for everyone who backed the Kickstarter, who never got all the items they were promised when they backed the game, yet who have been defending ED this whole time, this is outrageous.  ED saying, "We have plenty of money for the project, but we're siphoning off money to support another product," is not only a slap in the face, it's a kick in the nads.

There is also the matter of the free game which was supposed to be developed; free to download and free to play with one flyable aircraft and...wait for it...the FREE Normandy map.  Now, that couldn't be the Normandy map they're selling for $45...COULD IT?

There's a term for people who do things like ED is doing to the WWII sim community.  It starts with the letter A and the end rhymes with goals.

A company primarily interested in building modern jet simulations salvages a failed Kickstarter, delivers top-notch models of popular fighters, then announces that it's actually a viable business and that more will come.

Reaction: "A-holes, they should do more!". Half-empty bottles and all that...

Also, I can't help but notice the irony in criticising the failure of a Kickstarter project to deliver, and at the same time have a Star Citizen logo in one's signature.

Lets get this straight. The kickstarter didn't "fail". It was successfully funded. Its all here

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/508681281/dcs-wwii-europe-1944

Have a look at the part headed "the team" right under the header is

"The project is a joint venture between RRG Studios and Eagle Dynamics."

ED did not salvage a failed kickstarter they were jointly involved in a successful kickstarter. They then decided not enough folk were interested so they cut the rewards let their moderators throw out excuses and blame. Painted themselves as white knights and folk believed it. And still believe it because theyre too lazy to look for the truth and rather believe the moderators at ED

Edit

And yes they should do more because they promised so much more in the kickstarter. Campaigns included for each aircraft etc etc

Don't forget WWIIOL - very, very similar.  Except they run a kickstarter/gofundme every 8 months.

WWII stuff in DCS is quite fun to fly, just not so much in combat until they fix the damage model.  Until then, fooling around with systems failures and trying to fly a Spitfire like a helicopter in formation with a bunch of Huey's on the aerobatics server is what I'll stick with.  The first time my engine stopped mid-flight in a P51 was a fun one to try and figure out before I hit the ground, too.

Just re-downloaded DCS with Nellis and Normandy. Getting 90fps in VR on high settings on Nellis.  45 on Normandy so far. Im sure I can tweak.

Im glad I supported the kickstarter  $100 back in the day.  It took forever and is still a WIP, but the P51 with a clickable cockpit is definitely something.

Devs of  IL2 Stalingrad looks like they took notice of the 51 sales over there - keep the P51 discussion front and center focus.

ED just announced they'll be releasing the 2.5 merge in January 2018, so there's that!  :salute:

DCS World 2.5 News Update

Work is going well with the updated Caucasus map and the summer map is ready to go! However, there is still work to do on the Spring, Autumn, and Winter maps. Much of this revolves around integration of the new SpeedTree tech. This is a rather time consuming process and is not just a case of just dropping in new tech.

Additionally, a lot of work continues on updating the hundreds of missions and campaigns that need to be adjusted for the map changes. This primarily entails moving units and their routes out of the many new forested areas on the map. We want this move to DCS World 2.5 to be as bug-free as possible.

Finally, we have the holiday season fast approaching, and we need to give our staff time with their loved ones.

Given this, we will be releasing DCS World 2.5 by late-January 2018. This is not an estimate, this is a promise.

In order to avoid confusion and any update issues, DCS World 2.5 will be released as a new download. The current Open Beta will updated to DCS World 2.5, the Open Alpha will be removed, and DCS World 1.5 will remain but be unsupported.

Movement of DCS World 2.5 would then soon follow to Steam.

Thanks,

As being said in the Facebook announcement, Beta-version 1.5 will be updated to version 2.5. Current version 2.2 will be removed and stable version 1.5 will no longer be supported. All you need is one version in the future, which is the actual Beta 1.5.

I look forward to the day when DCS is merged into ONE install.  Maybe then I can return to it to fly.  There are far too many issues with incomplete content.  I abhor the idea of spending MORE money on a map, and then having to install a different version for content on said map.

It's as if they never finish anything they are working on.  I'm not talking about fixing bugs - I'm talking about finishing the actual content for the game and having it work together.  The way it is now is rediculous.

I am lately really having fun with the helicopters.. the 2.2 update fixed some of the external load errors on the Hip and despite it´s somewhat overly floaty FM it feels awesome lifting heavy stuff in it... or failing to do so properly...

BUU HUUU ,Oh no!  now you make them sad, and bankruptcy awaits them.

If I want a hour free flight in a ww2 type aircraft I choose DCS over everything else, it is not bad quality at all compared to the ww 2 contend of other brands. That you get pissed off by the fact that coders and 3D artist need training somewhere do not make sense at all. I can understand that less experienced people deal with less complex systems, and by doing so take extra care they do it right. As mentioned countless of times , problem is the widespread time era and planes and maps do not have historical connections. For some this do matter , for me it do not. My biggest problem is the fact that the only weapon around is guns, and the only worth while target is other planes, and if you do not choose the 109 you are probably good or very optimistic

Late January with the release of both DCS 2.5 and a finished Battle of Kuban. There won't be enough hours in a day. :)

I believe the only reason this isn't happening earlier is the almost universal break in the first two years of January in Russia. You don't want to release something then see it break while two thirds of your staff is in Turkey.
