CanadaOne Posted October 18, 2022 Posted October 18, 2022 ...and we're back. Pyongyang was lovely. Good food, great weather. Love the state issue haircuts and clothing. I really felt like part of the team. ? Next on the waiting list is the F-15E. Hopefully this year. 1 1

dburne Posted October 18, 2022 Posted October 18, 2022 Yeah DCS is a great sim that I enjoy very much same as I do IL-2 Great Battles. Currently more of my focus is on DCS as I enjoy some great single player campaigns for the Hornet and also mixed in with that trying to learn the aspects of the Apache. This is what I mainly use DCS for currently, and IL-2 Great Battles I use for my WWII action. I really need to get back into the latter and check out Normandy though, will be doing that very soon here.
Guest deleted@83466 Posted October 18, 2022 Posted October 18, 2022 Speaking of Apache, I was out watching one of the kitties in the yard, and I heard the strangest aircraft noise, very unique. I though it was one of those B-17s that does the air show circuit. I look up, and it’s a flight of Apaches. Have I never heard one before? I see a lot of Chinooks and Blackhawks fly over, but never an Apache. Nothing sounds like it. Just an aside. When people say DCS is so slooow, and takes 2 or 3 years to release a module, what quality game doesn’t? At any rate, don’t we all have so many flight sim airplanes in DCS, that it would probably take us that long just to learn the ones we already have? At least that’s me. I never even learned the very first module I had, which was the A-10C. I have no plans to buy anything soon.

Nothing sounds like it. Just an aside. It is weird isn't it? You'd think there'd be a very distinctive "whop whop" like a 'normal' chopper but they don't sound that way at all. It's like a steady prop sound almost like you said a large prop plane. Even a single Apache sounds that way, I'm guessing there was some engineering done to shape the blades to not chop, or at least be more subtle than other helos. I think DCS did a pretty good job modeling the sound, it's very authentic. But honestly most modules have outstanding sound design so it's par for the course I suppose. Now Chinooks... a flight of those things sounds like hell on earth. You can hear them from MILES away, if you're close they rattle the fillings out of your teeth.
Arfsix Posted October 18, 2022 Posted October 18, 2022 The movies notwithstanding, the "distinctive "whop whop" like a 'normal' chopper" only occurs with a two bladed rotor system like the Bell hueys (UH1 A- D, etc.). ?
Bremspropeller Posted October 18, 2022 Posted October 18, 2022 You didn't see an Apache. You saw a weather-balloon! 1

DBFlyguy Posted October 18, 2022 Posted October 18, 2022 The Apache definitely has a very distinctive sound, I live under a common flight route for an airport that has a National Guard Apache unit stationed there and hear them on the daily along with the occasional Blackhawk and Lakota. The sounds in DCS are spot on for the Apache, I've actually been flying it on DCS and an actual one will happen to fly over and they match perfectly, if it wasn't for the house rumbling a bit, I would've thought I had accidentally turned up the DCS sound ?

In the Apache you mostly just hear the engine over the blades, it's more of a droning sound. It almost sounds like a really big, powerful MD500.

Hoots Posted October 19, 2022 Posted October 19, 2022 I’m firmly of the belief that you have to be largely insane to want to fly a helicopter. You can square this madness when applied to flying a chinook. In a rare moment of sanity that guy is clearly trying to “accidentally” break it so that he won’t have to fly it. 1
Boogdud Posted October 19, 2022 Posted October 19, 2022 4 hours ago, Hoots said: You can square this madness when applied to flying a chinook. That's a fact, they're flying 2 helicopters at the same time! On another note about the apache, does anyone know if there's a way to switch the polarity/method of TADS targeting from the pilot seat? I usually throw the CP/G's target up on the right MFD when in combat just so I can actually see what George is targeting. But from there you can just change the zoom method. There doesn't seem to be a way to actually get him to switch between TV/FLIR, and switch hotness from the back seat. I usually have to pop into the front seat and switch it and immediately hop back (which screws up your trim if you're not in a hover at the time).

Truth be told, the Mi8 is pretty much all I need and want these days. BUT This ones comin home with me. Simple and beautifully done. 1 1

I can give a good home to your GPU if you are unhappy with it. ? I'm going to wait for a little feedback before I jump on the MB-339. The big thing for me is the cockpit has to be excellent. I want to see more videos. I can live with a boring weapons load or the plane not going too fast as long as the interior eye candy is really really good. 1

A lightly loaded Hip feels like an extension of my body, like I’m one with it. I got so good with it I almost broke my arm off patting myself on the back. The Hind is an obese dog by comparison. I started to feel better about it when I stopped thinking of it as a helicopter, and more of a old-school Sturmovik, with some VTOL/STOL capability. But when it comes to helicopters, the Hip is the most satisfying to fly so far, for me. Unfortunately, the DM is like glass.

Ive never found the relabilty of my old 6500K with the 5600X. Im likely an edge case but I do regret not stayng with Intel and its 12 series at the time. Solid or not its entry level for DCS as it stands. HOWEVER that is rarely an issue when Im a crusin in muh hiip ?

When I look at FPS charts for this CPU vs that CPU, the differences seem incremental, even with a serious price increase. I'm sticking with my 3700X because it seems getting a new CPU will be several hundred dollars for, I don't know, a 5% increase? Maybe I'm watching the wrong test videos. 58 minutes ago, BOO said: HOWEVER that is rarely an issue when Im a crusin in muh hiip ? Da Hip be cool, but da Ka-50 be bad! Want that BS3.

Trooper117 Posted October 21, 2022 Posted October 21, 2022 Great news about the AI improvements and lighting effects for the upcoming 2.8 update... sad though it won't be added for the WWII AI aircraft yet. 1 1
CanadaOne Posted October 21, 2022 Posted October 21, 2022 Hope to see it today after work. The weather effects look fantastic. Still on the fence with the MB-339, I'm guessing it will come out with 2.8.

CanadaOne Posted October 21, 2022 Posted October 21, 2022 I'll check it on my phone at lunch. I want the update more than the 339, but I'm open to being impressed by the plane.

Guest deleted@83466 Posted October 21, 2022 Posted October 21, 2022 (edited) I’m reading about the BS3 upgrade..hmm, I’m sure it will be very discounted for previous owners, but I’m thinking, maybe no…I feel like I wringed all that there was to have out of that module, and honestly not really enthusiastic about it, because I’ve been there and done that, online and off, even if the new one has Iglas and mws. Just me at this particular stage of interest in various helicopters. Hokum is one of best, and most unique modules there is, as it stands, no doubt in my mind. Edited October 21, 2022 by SeaSerpent EKRAN voice is kinda sexy too?
