This flight sim hobby seems to be getting more bizarre by the hour.

The AH/MH/OH-6 definitely look cool and I'm sure are fun to fly in a nice peaceful situation but they are nothing more than a target in pretty much every environment where the enemy is even half competent...

I still remember one of my high school history teachers talking about her husband who flew them in Vietnam, there was an instance where he was shot down multiple times within the span of a week doing the hunter killer mission they used to do with Cobras overhead, those Loach guys had balls of steel ... or a death wish... or both ?

I'm bummed we're not getting a Cobra in DCS, I was hoping eventually we'd get a Whiskey Cobra which  would've been nice competition for the Hind since it could carry Sidwinder's unlike the S and F models.

Have an acquaintance that did two tours, flying the egg; he recommended an excellent book and to this day I think it is the best helicopter combat book I have ever read and on of the maybe top 3-5 aviation books... " Low Level Hell"

Thanks! I've heard of this one but never got around to reading it, I'll have to check it out!

And in other news, the "battle" of the Normandy maps just got a bit more interesting....

Normandy 2

Normandy 2

Normandy 2

Awesome to see they are actually including the big important cities ?

The $10 price is a nice gesture. Im a little concerned that it will perform like Syria in the way it has to be hobbled view distance wise and  the short detail pop ins though.

I would also qualify for the $15 update.

Unfortunately I would also need to spend $/£2000 (probably no difference given the way our exchange rate is going. Thanks Liz ?) on a new PC to run it.

At $10, I'm 100% buying it and will start playing DCS more.

I'm not gonna lie, I'll be buying it as well. But it doesn't solve the problem with Normandy in dcs. They don't have period relevant aircraft for it, unfortunately.

I wonder why they would be going down this path, however, if there wasn’t some plan to flesh it out more.  So the K4 is out of place, maybe they’ll make a G-6.

Yeah they could fire up a Kickstarter and call it DCS: Normandy 1944 and get some guy named Ila to run it until everyone had bought in and then he could disappear. Oh wait,......

that already happened over 8 years ago? Hey come to think of it, WHERE'S MY ME262?

I think what happened 8 years ago with some kickstarter is irrelevant now.  Somebody must have taken WW2 seriously enough that all these years later, we not only have a Mustang, but also Spit, D9, A8, Mosquito, Thunderbolt.   And imo, they are pretty damned good.

ED has not fleshed out one genre yet, modern or WWII, at least for SP. I don't do MP so I am not speaking to that. Sure the WWII planes are fun for a week or two, maybe three at tops and a campaign or two, which most WWII modules have 2 or less for them. There is no career, no dynamic campaign as talked about by ED, and the only real sector that props DCS WWII up is a very small community offering. I hope your right and ED does have a plan to flesh out WWII, I damn sure wouldn't put any money on it if I were you though, and certainly don't hold your breath waiting on it. Ed just got around to implementing bomb fusing after all of these years in combat flight sim production. Hello? DCS is not fleshed out and most likely never will be, but here is to hoping. Good on you SeaSerpent.:good:

?? By all means, LA 7 and I 16 against K4 and A8

LA 7 is a good plane, but it seems like eastern front will be the most complete ww2 set we ever get.

I look forward to the Corsair,  it can if nothing else fit in a Korea look a like mission

La-7

.....yawn....

But, it is a new plane for the WWII part of the sim.  I'm more curious on what 2.8 will include besides the weather updates. Multi-core and vulcan finally?

Well they are saying its a big update but that could be due to all the other adjustments alluded to I guess. I suspect WW2 Marianas.

What is the direction of MSFS, rhetorically speaking?  Some people just like to fly planes that are detailed and well done.  Not everybody is in some competitive sim trying to do historical accuracy.   You can spend hours learning how to hover a helicopter over next to a patio table outside a cafe in LV, or getting good with the LABS system in a Sabre.  You might only be bombing a crop circle, for practice.  In other words, be it that it is a “study sim” in the finest tradition of PMDG and A2A, it sort of has a different quality than just theaters matched with correct aircraft.

An old friend said something like if you want fantasy, watch the Final Countdown (and I do watch the Tomcats vs Zeroes clip on YouTube more frequently than I should admit).  Have you ever done modern SEAD/Anti-Helicopter in a BF-109?  What does a MK108 do against a Spitfire?  What does a MK108 do against a Hind?  It’s all for fun, and that’s what video games are supposed to be.

This. I was very excited about the new Normandy map...until I saw that the Channel portion won't be modeled and now IDGAF. DCS WWII is run by people with no vision to put it mildly.

It‘s a 3rd party developer, and their first module was the I-16.

GB uses 3rd party devs to close gaps in their plan not to sprinkle unconnected content in at random. So it is a choice.

Would they be less detailed/worse done if they existed in a historical plausible context? They at least would be more interesting for me.

That‘s mainly what keeps me from buying into the warbirds.
