Bremspropeller Posted March 16, 2022 Posted March 16, 2022 We need to figure out a way to get Robey more excited about this game. I'd love to be yelled at and shooed off his lawn on a regular basis ? 1

A little late for the Mariana but I guess it's a match for USN Corsairs in 1945
Gambit21 Posted March 16, 2022 Posted March 16, 2022 Any Zero is better than a re-skinned 190. Why anyone would even bother with that for 2 seconds is beyond me - and nobody wants PTO more than me. Worse yet a mod using the Mustang.

dburne Posted March 16, 2022 Posted March 16, 2022 Looking like my school will be starting soon with the Apache. 3 Missions away from finishing a Hornet campaign, can I hold out? Probably not lol.
DBFlyguy Posted March 16, 2022 Posted March 16, 2022 Pretty cool but George definitely ain't no Jester...
dburne Posted March 16, 2022 Posted March 16, 2022 Yeah I just started watching that new vid and am like - holy crap! Methinks I am going to have a long road with this one for learning, 1
Monostripezebra Posted March 17, 2022 Posted March 17, 2022 (edited) I am broke, I gotta make do without fancy fighting helicopters.. and use old boxes instead! But I still have not managed to get the Huey on a catapult shot.. Edited March 17, 2022 by Monostripezebra 1
DD_fruitbat Posted March 17, 2022 Posted March 17, 2022 Hopefully today after work, I'll be able to Apache, just going to concentrate on taking off and flying then landing today!

Algy-Lacey Posted March 17, 2022 Posted March 17, 2022 Soon I will be downloading DCS World for the first time and would like some help with settings (Nvidia / Steam VR / In Game) to get an enjoyable experience in VR. I don't want to derail this thread (aside from this post) so I will start a new thread in this sub-forum. I'd love to hear all your views. I actually sold my Reverb G2 HMD to one of the developers at Eagle Dynamics and he has very kindly gifted me the Spitfire MkIX module and the Normandy Map module. And then I was browsing in a second-hand bookshop the other day and found a book that got me excited for the systems modelling of DCS, the book is 'Flying The Icon: Spitfire' By Jarrod Cotter and is based upon the original Spitfire Pilots Notes from the Mk 1 through IX / XVI and the griffon engined Mk XIX through to F.24. I can't praise it enough, it's a great book and makes me hungry for a hi-fidelity Spitfire! Happy-Landings! Algy-Lacey

Gambit21 Posted March 17, 2022 Posted March 17, 2022 “Allow text name for trigger flags” Holy Balls!! That’s huge. Gotta love the continuous mission editor development. “AI can now fly in formation at 100’” Again for me - huge benefit.

If I may, a couple of questions I have (and I hope it is not a faux pas to compare the two sims - IL-2 and DCS) How is the relative performance of DCS vs IL-2? (That is, assuming both are using Steam VR @ SS 100%) I can get a steady 80fps without reprojection in my Valve Index (SS 100% 2016 x 2240 pixels) with settings maxxed out (aside from MSAA x 2) in IL-2 on a i5 9600k 4.9GHz, 32Gb DDR4 and a RTX2080ti 11Gb. Would I be able to run the DCS Normandy map without reprojection (I think it is also reffered to as Motion Smoothing)? Does DCS have clickable cockpits? (If so, how does this work in VR? Mouse? Index Controllers?) Or are there a ton of buttons that I have to map? I'm thinking of getting an Authentikit Spitfire control column if I don't need to map gazzillions of buttons. Thanks for reading (and sorry for all the brackets) Algy-Lacey
unlikely_spider Posted March 17, 2022 Posted March 17, 2022 (edited) You will get better performance in IL-2 than in DCS. You'll have to use reprojection with DCS for sure. DCS has clickable cockpits that IL-2 lacks. The benefit of clickable cockpits is that you don't necessarily have to map those to keys as you can just click them with the mouse, but the plane's hotas controls you may have to map (for modern planes for example, that have hotas buttons, not really for most warbirds). dburne Posted March 17, 2022 Posted March 17, 2022 Well using Wag's controller setup video as a guide I have most of the controls set up. Thankfully he has a Virpil CM3 throttle so I just mapped mine like he has. Had to stop for the day though so maybe some learning to fly this thing tomorrow. Time for me to fix dinner now and have some wife time. Plus I am sure a lot of those controller mappings I won't need as I will be using my new Point Control with the Apache and flipping switches myself. Will resume tomorrow with learning cold start and maybe getting this puppy off the ground. I am so dang happy to have this chopper once again after all these years. And now in full fidelity! I am determined to learn this thing through and through and if I do maybe get a Virpil Collective for it. Going to wait to make sure before spending money on a collective. 1

The only way I’d conceivably be interested in the Apache is using it to create a fictional Marine, Tarawa/land-based “Sea Apache” campaign. You see now we have CAS. The Apache otherwise is not.a CAS platform. Pffttt. However since I’ve already bitten off too much in the DCS/content creation department, and since the Apache is just too complicated and outside of the time frame that I find remotely Interesting - not going to happen. Plus from where I sit it just lacks character. Too modern...too capable...too electronic. Turn-off. Like I keep saying an AH-1 is an instant buy (preferably an earlier 2 bladed whop whopper one, but I won’t turn down a later 4 blade, 2-engine model) however the Apache is a hard pass. I’d buy a CH-53 in a hearbeat too. 1

And I am having a ton of fun flying campaigns in the Hornet I hate to take away too much from that either. It is nice to be able to fly and enjoy combat in the Hornet now that the majority of the learning process is behind me and I can manipulate and fire the weapons on board without having to reference anything (most of time). I guess time will tell for me with the Apache. Will give it the good ole college try though. I so loved both Longbow I and II back in the 90's.
