Speaking of DCS mods, does anyone know what happened with Briana Cooper's Tu22?

Took off with empty tanks, filled them up (1,000gals total) and had a hard time getting rid of all the gas again. Those Shrikes managed to make a nice flyby of an SA-8.

The AI is better at evading missiles now - but going vertical against a Tomcat B-model at slow speed?

I'm trying to wrap my head around the seemingly insurmountable problem of making a tanker spawn and despawn more than once - without using several groups. Is there a way to reset the flag value to it's initial value? All efforts so far have lead nowhere.

My setup is something like this:

Once / - / create radio command (1,1) {to spawn tanker}

Once / flag (1,1) / spawn tanker; delete radio command

Once / tanker is alive /  create radio command (1,2) {to kill tanker}

Once / flag (1,2) / despawn tanker, delete radio command

Is there a way to get back to square one? "Once" doesn't work and "Continuous" will just spam the radio menu.

I have tried the "reset flag" option, but for some reason there's no real loop. I suspect it's the "once" thingy. ?

Edit: Nevermind, I just did it the agricultural way with three tankers spawning in succession each.

Great news! I hope they'll have another 'Jester' for this. The AI crewman is a great feature in the F-14, I don't need to remember all the boring procedures and many buttons :)

A proper tailhook. One that stops you at 4G.

They all share the exact same tailhook. ?

The main difference is the tyres and a lack of bridle hooks in the shore-versions.

Yeah, I was just looking it up. I knew there was a reason the USAF versions couldn't operate from carriers (beyond the obvious one of not letting a mere 'pilot' anywhere near a CV), but misremembered.

Anyway, it looks like we'll get the 'aviators' version too.

DTOS bombing now available for the F-16, can now easily use the Helmet to look at a target area, slave to TGP, fine tune, and then blow sh*t up. Been waiting for this for ages,

Tempted to preorder the AH-64D, but I have some doubts about the AI. How's ED's Petrovich compared to HB's Jester?

If I ever mess with it, it will be because I’m building a fictional Marine/Sea Apache campaign off the Tarawa. That will probably never see the light of day. I’d want to use it for CAS, and it’s simply not a CAS platform in Army hands.

Nice!

I’m more of a “drive it like it’s an A-Model” (or a C in 1991)  kind of guy with the Viper. Heat seekers and dumb bombs.

On the way back to the boat.

No, wait! The needle's pointing the other direction! Good I was using the radar and wondering why I wasn't picking up the boat by now.

My ball-flying skills in the Scooter have improved by a lot over the last couple of days. Baseline is about 85% RPM and then making quick adjustments and never really keeping the throttle still. Seems odd, but it works!

Have you tried the autothrottle, Bremspropeller?

As for flying off on the reciprocal, I'm sure we've all done it. I set off on a bit of a wild goose chase in the Hornet myself today, though I've got a good excuse (or at least good enough for me). Heading back to the CVN, TACAN said 68 nm or thereabouts, which seemed a bit far, but I didn't think about it much. Until I looked again a minute or two later, and it still said 68 nm. Since I was clearly moving, and apparently pointing in more or less the right direction, and since even the US Navy's finest nuclear carriers can't do 400 knots, I concluded that it was TACAN playing up again. Turning it off and on again fixed it, leaving me with a much more sensible 30 nm to go.

Always trust your instruments. Some of the time...

He does the same job, though less talkative and more task oriented than Jester. I actually prefer ED own orders menu system than Jester wheel menu, sometimes I feel it's too cumbersome. Petrovich commands are way more streamlined and less intrusive for your view

Nah, I have never touched the APC. Neither in the Hornet, nor in the Tomcat, nor in the Scooter.

It looks like it works real fine, but I'm too proud to try it ?

But Jester can do so much more than Petrovich - they're not even close in terms of bare functionality.

On the way to Nellis...Jester didn't comment when I pulled the manual out to read about the radio...likely he just didn't notice.

I mean: they are not operating the same systems, of course Petrovich has way simpler tasks than Jester, but he does them efficiently

But the overall concept is fine? Is crucial functionality missing or is there simply not much to do for him?

I'm just afraid to be disappointed compared to Jester.

Unless I'm extremely ignorant about ole Petrovich's capabilities, the only thing he can do is aim and fire the guided rockets in the Hind.

Whereas Jester can do (no necessarily all-inclusive) the following

- set TACAN

- set Radio

- set Jammer and Countermeasures mode

- set Datalink

- work the LANTIRN

- set A/G weapons (a royal duckton of options)

- fiddle with the radar (an imperial duckton of options, including jettisoning droptranks)

- call out airspeeds and bearings of the enemy

- call out airplanes

- call out radar-contacts and read their IFF

- give you sh1t about almost anything you're doing

I think Petrovich (George) in the Apache will be a lot more capable, but I don't know for sure. TBH the full functionality (just like in the Kitty) only comes with an actual dude (or dudette) occupying the virtual front/rear seat of your multicrew module. It's amazing when you're in the merge and another brain helps you out and does what's the right thing. Like drop the tanks without you even needing to ask for it.

he's currently very efficient at targetting non combatative objects like tetrapods and obsessing on the one tank on the wrong side of trees whilst ignoring the 17 on the right side of the trees

It's all gonna make sense when ED launches the tetrapod-trebuchet for Combined Arms.

To make the story short:

1)There is no comparison as Jester has to manage way more task than Petrovich.

2)The interface of the two are different, you can prefer Jester wheel or the Petrovich menus, that's something you have to decide for yourself. Personal taste, personally feel that for what he has to do it works fine.

3)For the full experience you will need another human player in any case. The AI still makes you work the module with realative ease for what they are tasked with

I agree with your post. I'd phrase this differently, though, as there's a lot of housekeeping stuff and micromanaging you'll have to do. See BOO's anecdote.

I'd say the AI enables you to operate the two-seater airplane as a single player, but as you said, you'll need a human to really make the most out of the module.

If you look at it this way, you won't have too high expectations. HB said they were planning on automating Jester to a higher degree so you won't need to micromanage quite as much. We'll see if they can pull this through.

Some things are really annoying, like calling out friendly radar-contacts (associated with a microstutter as I'm playing DCS on a HDD) when on the tanker* or rambling about other airplanes in the carrier pattern. No sh1t, Jester!?

___

* I usually shut Jester up close to the boat, but I prefer him talking on the Stratobladder as he'll call the fuel

I use Jester for one thing only, see if I manage to scare him to eject.

I am good at that, only that
