Nice to see VR is now a priority task to make it better.

Very excited for the Dynamic Campaign.

Little anecdote, my dad flew F4s and had a double flame out in this configuration. It did indeed fall out of the sky. The forestry commission complained about the hole in their forest.

Was this at night? I remember being sent up the road to Leuchars to help look for the crew of a Phantom that had ejected.

This was about forty years ago and I’m pretty sure it was an RAF F4 but wherever you came down around Leuchars you made a big hole in a forest.

Nope, but it was at Leuchars. Navy, not airforce. At the time there was an RAF and FAA sqn there. I was very young and I remember the place only for being wet, cold and windswept.

New interview Russian with ED:

Highlights posted on reddit:

  • ED is going to make a transport/cargo plane (the devs gave it a thought and decided that it's worth a shot). Details will be announced "in due time". There's a VERY small hint that this could be a WWII era module, but this is just my assumption, so don't quote me on this - ED haven't said anything specific.

  • AH-64: still on track to be released this year, there shouldn't be any delays. More than 15 SMEs are working on it (for comparison: typical ED module only has 2 or 3 assigned experts). Still, the team prefers real-world documents and data (if available) over the SMEs opinions, especially when they contradict each other.

  • At the moment, no 3rd party modules are queued for ED's review/certification. They haven't seen Kiowa or F-15E yet, so have no idea of their current status and quality.

  • F-4 Phantom is "definitely coming to DCS, and quite soon".

  • GCI/AWACS module: on the wishlist, but is kinda challenging. Maybe someday.

  • VR. This is now a priority task for ED to make it significantly better.

  • Updated manual for the Mission Editor will be released this Fall.

  • In development: improved infantry models with new animations. Improved infantry' pathfinding logic. "We're actively training our paratroopers right now". All older AI units will get the new models, eventually (inlc. S-3B).

  • The World War II Marianas will be released as a standalone map - not as a "time layer" for the current map, as suggested earlier. The map is still in pre-production.

  • Users should expect "appropriate vehicles, ships and planes" to be released for the 1944' Marianas.

  • The devs are still committed to make the full fidelity MiG-29 once the Black Shark 3 is released.

  • Dynamic campaign: initial release will be limited to single player. Multiplayer mode will be added later. "We're big fans of Falcon BMS".

  • Chizh: the devs are quite satisfied with the controversial R-27ER's FM rework. Another round of fine-tuning in different modes is planned for later, but this could result in a slightly nerfed stats. Same overhaul is planned for the R-77, but it will be much more challenging, because of the missile's grid fins and the lack of unclassified data.

  • Several dedicated devs are currently assigned to upgrade all air-to-air missiles to the new flight model. Once done, they'll gonna rework the proximity fuzes.

Disappointingly, seems a bad transition,  F4 not confirmed after all by ED, more accurate transition is they expect it at some point....

Kev, is 'transition" a band translation of "translation"? lol

I get the drift in any case... :)

I loved flying in and out of Leuchars. 43 Squadron and 111 Squadron "Treble One" were there. I saw "Time Bandits" at the tiny local cinema near the University one Friday night. I even had to smile at the "posh university girls" looking down their noses at us whilst trying to chat them up in the pubs.

Time bandits is an awesome film! My dad may have been prejudiced against Leuchars due to the whole plane falling out of the sky thing. I’m sure there were lovely sunny days but they don’t stick in the memory. Anyway, F4 in dcs, buy it in a heartbeat

I had the joy of being a (non-posh) student at said University. Watching the F3's scramble from atop the cliffs by the ruined cathedral was always a joy. Though not as much fun as being on the platform at Leuchars during QRF takeoffs - the station is directly under the flightpath and the Tonka's would roar overhead at about 100ft on full reheat. Helluva noise!

I'm sure you dashing military types had much more luck with the posh university girls than I ever did :P

A bit cruel methinks…… Spent my last 10 years in the “mob” at Leuchars working F4’s and “Tonka F3’s with both 43 and “Tremblers” before retiring in 93. Even settled locally and I can say hand on heart that we get at least 10 sunny days a year…………well certainly some years ?

They were not impressed with lads in Levi's, running shoes, and T-shirts speaking with an absolutely offensive American accent. But the flying in Scotland...that still makes me smile. Zipping along Loch Ness with the red light (you're below 200 feet) in the radar altimeter shining brightly and my WSO genuinely asking, "can you go any lower?"

LOL...downwind? Wichita 103 must be a Navy reservist with a fulltime gig as a Whale driver for Northwest Airlines.

LOL, The old "Whale" was the A-3D back in 80's. So a Whale driver would be an A-3 driver. The crews said A-3D stood for all three dead on a cold shot. Gambit, research April 18, 1988 Operation Preying Mantis, for a good real world scenario for a mission. You need to make it with Hornets instead of Corsair II's, VFA-22 & VFA-94.

Cheers

The pendant in me must point out the critical detail...a Whale driver for ...wait for it...wait for it...Northwest Airlines. ;) Now if you want to get deep, the EF-10 was called Willie the Whale (I flew with a Marine at NWA that flew them on AD).

LOL, Potato, patato..........  it's hard to let go of being associated with Naval Aviation for over 43 years. Hearing certain things just triggers certain memories, of all the crap I've seen and experienced.  No civil aviation experience, my Boeing time was all spent on defense programs, not counting the 20 I spent in in USN

Whilst I have not seen any specific information on individual modules I would "assume" it would be for all but who knows.

In my case I only use DCS for the jets and choppers, IL-2 for all my WWII action.

Has anyone seen an F-14 Velocity Vector lying around somewhere? I seem to have lost mine.  ?

F-14-no-VV.png

I was definitely in HUD landing mode, so it should have been there. No great problem, landing on a runway, but it would be nice to know why it disappeared. Possibly a bug I suppose, though it could easily be me hitting the wrong switch somewhere, or even damage as a result of pulling to many Gs while using Yak-40s for gunnery practice (yes, I am that evil). Strange...

I'd also like to know whether real Tomcat-jockeys used to set their top mirror up like that? While being able to see how incredibly cool you are at a glance is always useful, on the whole I'd rather tilt it up a bit so I can see what's going on behind me, even if it is only Jester reaching for the barf-bag.

Did you accidentally use a declutter-function? ?

Your descent-rate is quite high (about twice the normal rate), so the VV might be outside the HUD and short of the runway.

Can't tell from a screenhot.

Declutter would have explained it, but the declutter switch was definitely in the 'off' position - I'd recorded the landing on video, so I can be sure about that.

As for descent rate, it wasn't exactly a stabilised approach, though I managed to land ok in the end. A bit long, but  that isn't an issue in this thing - unlike the Hornet, the brakes seem to be functional, rather than just there to exercise your feet...

Edit: Thinking about it, I should probably have aborted the landing as soon as I noticed the VV issue. Maybe turning declutter on and off again might have fixed it. And if it didn't, it would have given me an opportunity to check that nothing else was playing up.

Naaah, just pull the red filter and fly it by the steam-gauges. The HUD is always in the way - especially when you're trying to see the ball.

The most important info is available by the steam gauges and you have two AoA indications (the indexer and the awesome tape-indicator) left to play with.

It feels funny at first, but it helped me a lot. If the missing VV is a bug, I never even recognized it ?

You can salvage a lot by using DLC. I usually try using it to begin a trend (e.g. descending more or less, levelling off, intiating a climb). It's quicker reacting than just using the throttles and it might save your rear end when coming across the ramp low. Going military (or blower) with the throtles will instantly stow DLC and the boards. A thing that's useful to know...

The Tomcat seems to generally have more sticky wheels than the Hornet, which also requires a higher breakaway thrust, making deck-spotting a little akward compared to the Hornet.

1978, we (5sqdn lightnings up from binbrook) arrived for TFM due to start on the Monday. I can remember standing in hanger whilst we parked a couple for debug, the other half contained roped off area where they were placing the recovered parts for the AARB. Most tragic thing I ever saw, especially listening to the instructions given to those from leuchars doing the area trawl circa "we think we recovered all the gruesome bits, if you do find any put a mark, find someone and go sit down if you need to". Thank god we had other things to occupy us.
