I can never handle a Hind cockpit for more than a few minutes.  The little spinning fan drives me crazy.  I cant stop staring at it.

They are even more surprising when you lean forward and wonder what the f**K that flapping slapping buzzing sensation is on you forehead!!

Quite the wake up on a long slow flight or when tensely studying a temp gauge ?

There are buildings and trees on short final, so the approach is very steep and you won't get the airplane to stop from this direction...

I remember an Airshow I once attended in Baldonnel, decades ago. They had a Falcon do a touch and go, it flew out over my head, at about 300 metres. The reverb almost made me shit myself. "Almost".

Hind and Cyprus!

Cool. I have the Hind pre-ordered. Having great fun in Mi-8 at the moment.

Mi-8 is such an underrated module. It could use a graphical update other than that it's a blast.

Very excited for the Hind.

I am considering buying a collective for helis. Any insights on that. Virpil looks cool but a bit too pricey.

I need Cyprus.

Low level VR coming up to weapons range on the northwest peninsula.

I thought that was just the F-14 notes.  Is it the whole shebang?

To clarify I have never flown a Hind, but spent a lot of time as co-pilot on Mi-8 and other Russian a/c the same fans seem to be fitted to all a/c

They are made of a fairly soft rubber and give you quite a slapping followed by mockery from the rest of the crew

Updating now. 32 GB for me. I'm going to have to think about clearing more space on my 1 TB games drive soon. I suspect X-Plane will have to go. Either that, or I'm going to need another SSD.

Dang, if I hadn't invested so much money into third-party addons, I'd probaly think the same.

The game-performance has really taken a down-turn.

I'll probably go and delete some more liveries...

Posted

I've just looked, and found I've got two X-Plane installs on the drive - and by the look of it, the 'beta' version is older than the final one, so there isn't much point in having them both anyway. Deleting one is only going to postpone the issue though, so more storage is clearly the way to go. I've got a third unused M.2 NVMe slot on the mobo, and an unused SATA connection too, so it really comes down to which is the better option. I'm inclined to go for another SATA SSD, since it seems sensible to go for a 4TB one (did I really write that...) and 2.5" SATA SSDs that size seem a lot cheaper. I'll leave the M.2 slot for when the price drops a bit. For most practical gaming purposes, SATA SSDs only seem to be marginally slower anyway, from what I've read.

lol, I've got a 2 M.2 NVMe 1TB drives in my computer, the second has DCS stable, DCS open beta and Microsoft flight sim on, nothing else.

126 Gig left free!!!!

Hmm, I wonder how many CD Rom's that would of been, lol

Edit, about 1600 apparently ?

My new rig has a 2TB drive dedicated to flight sims, which means DCS (and a little IL2) only.

I doubt I’ll ever bother installing MSFS, just not enough stick-time available.

I won’t be flying IL2 until it goes PTO, but I’ll keep it updated.

CD Roms? Pah! Real software came on cassettes. And took half an hour to load 16 Kb of data. Or almost load it, before popping up an error message.

You youngsters... I remember when it wasn't possible to economically store/buy data in an electronic form.. Software came as paper booklets of printed code for you to manually copy type into your computer. It took all day and dig bugger all at the end of it because you invariably mis-typed one character in one line of the code somewhere, and yet we were  still impressed.

The good ol' days eh!

Yup, been there, done that too.

Though to be fair, having someone write the software for you was a luxury. Poor little Ada Lovelace had to write it all herself. With no manual. Only to find, when she'd finished, that Babbage hadn't even finished building his engine.

Nice! I know right where that is.

I came home from work to start the update after Thomas’ post earlier. Given my pathetic download speed - I may have to wait until tomorrow ?

We’ll see. 40 mins before I can go check.

I remember doing that on my PC Junior. I’d spend an hour typing code so that I could get some colored swirlies or some such. Then I’d get bored and play King’s Quest or MFS.

Oh FFS!

5.5 out of 32GB’s....?

At least with DCS the patch download does cause a wasted night where I can’t work in the editor (or fly) yeah that got old.

Had a couple of flights in the Hind around the new parts of the Syria map.  Lovely, stable machine which is pretty easy to get to know and fun to zip about the mountains of Turkey north of Cyprus - could almost be Afghanistan!

Yeah, kinda.

And if you mis-dial, you're giving the wrong house a ring.

Lots of more practising for me.

I'll have to be careful not to unlearn the F-14. I've come to realize that trapping is a perishable skill and I've become quite a HUD-cripple with the F-16 already.

The burble is an absolute game changer.

And when I say game changer, I mean a vicious, sadistic and downright terrifying skewing of all you thought you knew and had become - if not comfortable - at least prepared for, when it comes to carrier landing the F-14.

Sweaty palms back in business! Yikes.

I did my work experience aged 15 at RAF Marham in 1999. I remember being utterly gobsmacked that the mission data was loaded to the Tornado onboard computer system through a hatch covering a literal tape deck...

The crews were very excited at the upcoming GR4 upgrade where they'd load the mission data from CD's!

So, a couple of days ago I decided that I would buy the Hind.

Added it to cart and everything went well, until I had to pay and found out that Paypal has changed their card verification system, so that I am just not able to link it to my paypal account or load money to it. Tried the other option, Saferpay, and ended up in the same situation.

Now the Hind is out and I can't fly it, because the online payment verification systems have been made so secure that payment becomes impossible.

Yep. It's quite stable and predictable. Very fast for a helicopter. I just had time for two quick flights, but i love how you can fell the weight of the machine, in flight. This is something DCS got very well.

I did have a chance to fire that awesome, monster gun and launch some rockets on some poor amtracks.

I'm going to enjoy this.

Real pilots, real footage. No CG.
