CanadaOne Posted April 22, 2021 Posted April 22, 2021 Hmmmm, might have to jump into this sweet looking thing. And with the 2.7 clouds, it's the best looking sim there is. 1
CUJO_1970 Posted April 22, 2021 Posted April 22, 2021 Canada how is your new rig working out? I’m still waiting on a damned video card. 1

Howdy, Not that new anymore, but it runs DCS really well. I was telling Gambit that I feel lucky to have the 2060 Super I bought at the end of 2019. I'd like a new card as well, maybe a 3070, but I'm not even thinking of getting my hands on anything before the fall. Or spring next year. The main thing for this rig is to run DCS well, everything else is a distant second. And the 3700X/2060 Super combo handles 1080 nicely. But I think 1440P would be painful. What card are you waiting on? 1
Boogdud Posted April 22, 2021 Posted April 22, 2021 I seriously love the new sights (and new sounds too) of the warbirds in DCS. But the horrendous ufo AI flight models send me back to il2. They really need to revisit the ai behavior/cheating. Watching as an ai enemy goes from nearly stealing to suddenly climbing like an apollo rocket is pretty disheartening. 1

With my new system (5800x) and my old 1080 I already see a huge difference in performance in IL2. A good measure of the extra overhead is hitting the time accell and watching the time actually accelerate. The GPU boost will have to come later. Downloading DCS this week. They still have some stuff to work out, that's for sure, but the flying experience with DCS remains superior. And it's getting better and better. Take the P-51 up over the Channel map and it's absolutely top shelf. Love me my P-51!

I do love those warbird sounds in DCS though, that modern day pilot in the P-51 needs to go though, I really LOVE the era period accurate pilot models we have for all the nations in IL-2, looking forward to the new ones coming with BON

Syria is my favourite map by far. It's getting to the stage where I am running out of scenarios in the area and just using it as places like Afghanistan etc due to it's versatility. I think it has the best portrayed cities in DCS currently. 2

Bremspropeller Posted April 23, 2021 Posted April 23, 2021 Montana - that was a song by Toto, wasn't it? Taxiing to RWY 09 at Ramat David. The Montana ANG is in town for some DACT training. Departing eastbound. IAF Vipers hitting the tanker. The boom-operator is a bit slow... Pardo's Push - featuring Jeff... A swedish Viggen and wind-power somewhere on the syrian map... A Holloman Viper departing RWY 09 at Ramat David for a local fam-flight. Those clouds won't get old for quite some time... Forming up on a Hornet that couldn't talk to her tanker. The Hornet is led back to Ramat for a shore-bingo. Unfortunately Ramat doesn't have any stock precision approaches (not even a TACAN on the map!). The TACAN can now be substituted by a mobile unit, but Ramat should actually have an ILS. Not too much help for the poor Hornet, but the Viper would greatly benefit with that low startus undercast... Coing for a hole in the clouds near Haifa...
AndyJWest Posted April 24, 2021 Posted April 24, 2021 (edited) Yay! The T-45 mod is out. https://forums.eagle.ru/topic/203816-vnao-t-45-goshawk/?do=findComment&comment=4640382 I'm downloading now, will report back after I've made my usual crap landing after multiple bolters, or rammed the back of the CVN. Edit: Yay! First landing! That was after one bolter. The LSO may have been assessing it as a Hornet landing, of course. I've recorded the track, and if it plays back properly, I'll be able to get a better idea of what it was like. Mind if I join you, fellas? ? Couldn't find 'call ball' in comms, though maybe that's me. Otherwise, seems to work as expected. Definitely easier to trap than the Hornet. Now I need to read the manual properly (I've found one for the real thing online), and figure out how I'm supposed to fly it. The catapult launch was a little iffy, and I may not have had it set up right. Edited April 24, 2021 by AndyJWest 3

Just go full power an wait, till the launch-bar is accross the shuttle... It seems to trap a little easier than the Hornet. 3

Bremspropeller Posted April 25, 2021 Posted April 25, 2021 (edited) On the way out to the boat. Taking a travelpod full of booze...medicine for the boat's doctor... I have to say that Hawker-Siddeley designed a real looker back in the day. I fire up the TACAN and cruise at 30000ft at a "leisurely" 300KIAS. All under the eyes of an ever-growing impatience from the rear seat. That's the famous Tasker-intercept flown onto that TACAN... Well, let's hope that travelpod is Mach 1+ rated... Time to look good... After butchering a couple of Case I circuits, the boat finally manages to grab me for good. I decide to bomb-up and hit the "range" (I swear, that's what that water-tower read!) on the way back. She can take twelve practise-bombs (or alternatively two seven-shot rocket-pods). Nothing to start WW3 on, but still more deadly than the *internal* gun. "Internal" as in "gun-noise in your headphone"... Edited April 25, 2021 by Bremspropeller
AndyJWest Posted April 25, 2021 Posted April 25, 2021 Quote I fire up the TACAN and cruise at 30000ft at a "leisurely" 300KIAS. I was doing much the same thing earlier, though at 35,000 ft, and 220 KIAS, trying to see what fuel consumption was like for a long range cruise. Went well enough for the first 20 minutes or so, other than being a bit directionally unstable at that speed. Then my eyes started playing up. Or I thought they did. I couldn't see the HUD properly. As it started to get dimmer and blurrier, I finally realised it was simulating oxygen deprivation. Oops! Score plus one to DCS for being so convincing, and minus one to me for not looking at the cockpit altitude pressure gauge - though I'm not entirely sure it actually works at all, since it was reading 40,000 ft, and didn't seem to go back down again. Anyway, a rapid descent down to 10,000 ft solved that problem, though it did leave me wondering whether I'd have enough fuel to get back to the boat with a sensible reserve, or whether I'd be better off diverting. Got back with plenty, since I was going downwind, and the carrier was heading towards me. The quickstart manual says that the OBOG (on-board oxygen generator) is 'not simulated'. Possibly 'not functional' would have been more informative. Any thoughts on the catapult launch, Bremspropeller? Set up per NATOPs, with full flap and 3.5 degrees up trim, she seems to drop alarmingly even with 30 kts over the deck. I tried 6 degrees trim, which seemed better, though that then means you have to reduce it pretty rapidly once it gains speed. This was with full fuel, and no stores - NATOPs says you aren't supposed to catapult with external stores, though I'm sure I will, since I'm my own Admiral. ?
Bremspropeller Posted April 25, 2021 Posted April 25, 2021 28 minutes ago, AndyJWest said: I'm my own Admiral. Same here! TBH: I haven't taken too deep a plunge into the NATOPS yet. I was a bit concerned about the AoA-dial reading close to 10 units in cruise, but evidently that's a realistic figure - I crosschecked that with some videos on youtube. Seems you'll need to haul 20 units to get her over the top at 150 doing a loop. Looks like minimum entry speed is somewhere around 300KIAS (250 if you're comfortable going really slow)... I usually forget to re-set my trim before launch when doing Carqual-stuff, so I'm used to seeing *sky* just off the cat, followed by a fistfull of nose-down pitch input, followed by the backseater clenching the seat-cushion with his buttcheeks... I think we should give the mod some time to get a couple of rough edges out. I'm a little concerned with the way the rudder works now, but I'm sure they'll iron those issues out. The performance-figures seems to be okay'ish right now.
AndyJWest Posted April 25, 2021 Posted April 25, 2021 Yeah, it's very much a WIP, and my comment about the OBOG wasn't meant as criticism. As for AoA readings, it seems to be standard practice for aircraft AoA indicators to be calibrated in arbitrary units, rather than degrees. Possibly because with the funny aerodynamics of such things, degrees wouldn't mean much anyway. At high alpha and low Mach (where it matters most) the air is quite likely already heading upwards well before it reaches the wing, making the output dependent on where you put the probe. 1
Bremspropeller Posted April 26, 2021 Posted April 26, 2021 When they went to build NAS Meridian, real estate was not an issue it seems... Some more T-45 love...
Gambit21 Posted April 26, 2021 Posted April 26, 2021 Now downloading Syria. Some quick math - it will be 48 hours... Then the F-14...then I'm done for now. Although I should probably do some proper training at Nellis with the T-45. (Nevada already installed thankfully)
Bremspropeller Posted April 26, 2021 Posted April 26, 2021 Nellis is Air Force grounds and hence has the coodies. Plus there's only jacuzzis and swimming-pools around, so placing a carrier to grab that 3rd wire might become a challenge. ? 1

AndyJWest Posted April 26, 2021 Posted April 26, 2021 Personally, I'm using the eastern Med as a substitute for the California coast while pretending to be a carrier noob (doesn't take much pretending, really...). Haifa sort of works as a stand-in San Diego if you don't think about it too much - or at least, it provides a convenient airfield for when you've had too many bolters, and heading shorewards seems sensible. Just stick the CVN a few miles off the coast, heading northwards. In the interests of peace and harmony, I'll refrain from commenting on what part Beirut plays in this fake scenario... 2
Bremspropeller Posted April 26, 2021 Posted April 26, 2021 Ramat David is a nice stand-in for Miramar, indeed. I use the new airfield just north of Lake Tiberias (Rosh Pinna) as a TraCom base. 1
Bremspropeller Posted April 26, 2021 Posted April 26, 2021 (edited) Rosh Pinna: The runways are less than 4000ft, but they're long enough for daytime VFR fiddling in the pattern (take-offs, landings, touch-and-goes). The new lebanese airfield just north of the israeli border acts as a nice practise-range. There seems to be a bugged fuel-metering unit, as my FF pretty much stays constant throughout the altitudes (and increasing with Mach), hence rendering a sporty supersonic performance that would be in T-38 territory: Me at M 1.26 just above 40000ft in level-flight. I'm going to take this very slowly.
