Ok I am in love with the tomcat and are currently working on liking the Hornet

As someone who loves aviation but has no interest in spending a bunch of time seeking out and destroying targets outside of visual range, how is the typical experience with those fighters? All my sim experience is generally WW2 or early cold war, but also I'm learning the A-10c now so that I could play the Baltic Dragon campaigns.

I fly choppers in DCS and have close encounter to my targets. Or the SU 25A/T

I never flown tomcat in other missionsthan jus landing and free flight. I probably will take the hornet or the harrier on a bomb run. I am not very keen on This modern technology other than learning the systems. I have no time being good in many ac. So I try to keep it as short missions

Yes I think it is cool too. Reminds me of another favorite of mine the IL2.
something is just right with that one.

Small, fast, tough, simple, armed to the teeth, that great little gunsight, what's not to love? Too bad it can't have a 23mm gatling gun in the nose. Then it would be perfect.

Have to admit I was much happier with it after I found out I could lower the gunsight glass.

Well my attempt to “like” the Hornet is simply not working. I do not dislike it, but flying it make me think while landing , why am I not in the Tomcat. Looking at the systems I think , why am I not in the Harrier. But when I tried Tomcat and Jester AI in a2a combat I thinking why am I not in anything else

I hear ya, but I'm still probably getting the F-18 when it's on sale at Steam. For the moment I'm still flying it on a standalone DCS install so I can have it on trial for another two-weeks. I like the A2G action. Lots of big bombs and A2G missiles and that's my bag. And it goes well with the SC.

If we're all still locked inside next winter, I might even learn the startup routine.

They've got the carrier release scheduled for May 20th, and some flightsim channels on Youtube have an advanced copy to test, so that's a big positive for the release date being real. Might see the Marianas map soon as well, and maybe the P-47. Not excited about the P-47, but a new (free!) map sounds great.

And IL2 has a big fat update out soon as well. Good time for flightsimmers. :drinks:

Hit a wall in the F 14 Tomcat. Loved it until I tested a combat mission. This interaction with Jester make me nuts. Like the idea but I feel old and find myself less interested when it comes to tech. Hope I can overcome my hesitance and try out voice attack

Voice Attack with the Vaicom Pro plugin is fantastic.

Disclaimer though I do not yet fly the Tomcat.

I can second this; Vaicom Pro with the AI RIO plugin is fantastic.  No more need for the Jester wheel, and just so much easier and faster once you've learnt the commands (pick up a kneeboard or printable cheatsheet from the DCS downloads section).  Also, the chatter pack addon is great as well.  100% recommended.

As opposed to the "just for fun" variety?

The P-47 just don't float my boat.

On the other hand the IL2 makes me............................. warm all over:dance:

You used the word "forced". Well, aren't they all forced, kinda?

I wonder if DCS would ever make an IL2, of if that would be considered an act of war? :hunter:

Check it out, the Grim Reapers made a supercarrier video just for me.

Seriously, I requested it, they answered me and said they would do it, and here it is.

And it looks gooooood.

finally got to spend a couple of hours pootling around in this. Flies well enough, though I'd prefer a version powered by a jet engine rather than a hairdryer. ?

As for the supercarrier, what I've seen so far is enough to convince me to buy it. Arguably much of it is eye candy, but the stock CVs are somewhat lifeless.

The eye candy is 75% of why I'm buying it. I want that fancy night lighting action for my Harrier. I want to pull up for a VTOL landing while F-14s are taking off up front and the little dudes are running around.

I bought this back in Feb, but haven't had a chance to even sit in it yet (mainly because I hadn't even fired up DCS since January).  Looking forward to learning it eventually , it seems they've really put in a lot of work into it.

I'd be careful with the Harrier and SC full compatability; landings should be fine, but IIRC you won't be able to interact any other way (rearm/refuel etc).

Even though I bought the SC and F-18 at the begining of this year, I wasn't really hyped (or even in a DCS mood for months) until I saw Growling Sidewinder's video:

I'm off to learn the F-18...

I'm sure there will be no Harrier compatibility for quite a while, but maybe one day. But there's not one little virtual bastard in a yellow shirt on the carrier who will stop me from taking off and landing on it.

It's MY carrier. And they will bend to my awe.

Yeah, they seem to have done a good job on the C-101. I've spent far too much on DCS already, so won't be buying it for now though: maybe later.

Meanwhile, I'm working on getting my Hornet landings to resemble something other than outright panic, at least externally. Tacview is useful for this, though sometimes it isn't really necessary. My last effort was obviously all going wrong, from the moment I turned downwind:

F-18-Tacview-course.png

Turned in too tight, and then overcorrected to compensate. At which point, trying to make it look elegant wasn't an option, so I wandered off downwind further I needed to. Which at least enabled me to line up in plenty of time. Not that it helped much, as I still managed to slam into the deck much steeper than I should have done, catching the third wire only by coincidence. If I do it like that in SC, the LSO-bot is probably going to ask to be transferred to submarines. ?

It is pretty snazzy looking though, hard to resist that level of flightsim goodness. An interactive HD carrier. It'll be fun just to fly around and watch it in action.

can you refuel on  air in the free stuff of dcs?

thats something ubercool and sexy

DCS has air-to-air refuelling, but not in the free planes. As for it being ubercool and sexy, it may well be, but as far as putting the thing into the thing goes, I'm still trying to lose my virginity. A lot of fumbling around, but so far no actual penetration, and definitely no exchange of fluids... ?

Take your pants off the next time you make the attempt. You might have better luck.

And post pics. I promise they won't become a meme.

Ah, Case 1 panic.  I think we've all been there!

Have you tried the Case 1 Recovery Trainer?  https://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=221412

Helped me really nail down the F-14 (although I've probably forgot it all), and will be using it for the Hornet as well when the time comes.

Yup. Case 1 Panic all right. Lord knows what Case 3 is going to look like... My next effort wasn't much better. Bimbling back to mother with plenty of go-juice. No problems in the world. Until I caught acute bolteritis:

F-18-Tacview-course-2.png

Five attempts. Four bolters. I think the ball is lying to me. ? Made my final circuit extra tight because otherwise I was going for a swim. Had 380 lb in the tanks when I finally caught a wire.

I should probably try the Recovery Trainer.
