HagarTheHorrible Posted January 22, 2020 Posted January 22, 2020 I reckon it's just as relevent here as elsewhere. 1917, the movie, go and see it, it's actually very good. I was a bit skeptical to start with and unconvinced by the first couple of minutes, couldn't quite identify with the main characters, but soon forgot that and enjoyed the film thoroughly. Very powerful stuff. .........and while you're at it, if you haven't seen Journeys End, catch that as well, I highly recommend it, It should be easy enough to find on some streaming service.

ST_Catchov Posted January 22, 2020 Posted January 22, 2020 Damn I thought you were talking about a 1917 channel map and planes! But yes I have heard 1917 (the moving picture) is very good.
Chief_Mouser Posted January 23, 2020 Posted January 23, 2020 (edited) I was underwhelmed by '1917'. Like the recent 'Dunkirk' it's a one-trick pony, or perhaps even it's the Emperor's New Clothes. It should, deservedly, win the Oscar for best cinematography but when you take that away there isn't much underneath. Like 'Dunkirk' there seem to be very few people about on the battlefield, and it takes place in a very oddly conceived geography of northern Europe. Plus, it is very episodic, rather in the fashion of some videogames; complete a task then move on to the next one. The main characters and the story are very thin. I didn't dislike it, but I know that I shall never watch it again, it doesn't merit a repeat viewing for me. If you want to see a WW1 film about a soldier attempting to deliver a message in order to stop an attack then watch Peter Weir's 'Gallipoli'; a far superior film even if it does have a noticeable anti-English bias. Cheers. PS Saw 'Jojo Rabbit' the next day. Enjoyed that much more! And 'Journey's End' is well worth it too. Edited January 23, 2020 by No.322_Red_Cat 1 1
Falkenstein Posted January 23, 2020 Posted January 23, 2020 (edited) Saw 1917 last Friday, I was amazed by it. While not as entertaining as Ford v Ferrari, which I loved, glad to see both get Academy Award nominations for Best Picture. 3 hours ago, No.322_Red_Cat said: It should, deservedly, win the Oscar for best cinematography ... I concur, I'll be shocked if it doesn't win Cinematography. Edited January 23, 2020 by Falkenstein
JG1_Butzzell Posted January 23, 2020 Posted January 23, 2020 Yes on Cinematography. While they will show either Trenches or Fields with dead cows, it is the crater scene where they walk around the inside. That was a totally new use of the camera. Very outstanding.
Feathered_IV Posted January 23, 2020 Posted January 23, 2020 Saw it on Tuesday. Definitely agree about the crater scene. That was very good indeed. Wasn’t so keen on the Albatros bit, but for the rest I enjoyed it quite a lot.
JGr2/J5_Klugermann Posted January 23, 2020 Posted January 23, 2020 Will probably save my 12 bucks for the DFW collector plane.
