JG3_Werner Posted January 21, 2020 Posted January 21, 2020 Hello, I have googled this issue extensively and attempted forum searching as well, to no avail. I'm sure it has been answered somewhere though, so apologies in advance for what is likely duplication. I have successfully built missions on the Moscow and Kerch maps, and was turning my attention to Velikiye Luki. I can get trains to run on the tracks well enough, but any time I try and land a plane on a runway, or start a plane On Parking or On Runway, it's as though the true ground level is somewhere beneath what's visible and my aircrews disappear and die. I have ensured that "Terrain Presets" is set to velikieluki in order that the Height Map is correct, and yet this happens. What am I missing? Thank you in advance for your help. Werner
CorvusX Posted January 21, 2020 Posted January 21, 2020 (edited) Hi, please check in the ".mission" file the line: SeasonPrefix It should look like this for a winter setting: SeasonPrefix = "wi"; and like this for summer: SeasonPrefix = "su"; if "su" or "wi" is missing, set it to the season you want. I had this once and for me this worked. Edited January 21, 2020 by CorvusX
jollyjack Posted January 21, 2020 Posted January 21, 2020 yep, and using set to ground on a linked entry plane on the runway also can solve these issues. Sometimes using apply terrain presets (again) also might help.
JG3_Werner Posted January 22, 2020 Author Posted January 22, 2020 (edited) Thanks both for the suggestions. Here is the relevant chunk of my .mission file, I had set it up as a winter mission and see snowy ground when I fly it, and looks set up properly in the text file: HMap = "graphics\LANDSCAPE_velikie_luki\height.hini"; Textures = "graphics\LANDSCAPE_velikie_luki\textures.tini"; Forests = "graphics\LANDSCAPE_velikie_luki\trees\woods.wds"; Layers = ""; GuiMap = "vluki"; SeasonPrefix = "wi"; I have clicked set to ground on the planes, and when I flip to 3d view they look like they're in the right place with their wheels touching the surface properly, it's when I launch the game that they disappear below the surface and die. I have even tried creating a new mission from scratch that consists entirely of one solitary plane starting "on parking", and that has the same problem. I had though maybe my original mission files had corrupted somehow. Edited January 22, 2020 by JG3_Werner removing personal email address
jollyjack Posted January 22, 2020 Posted January 22, 2020 (edited) yep, had that too recently, and IMO the fix has to do with reloading the maps and seasons. Press Terrain Presets, select season and the Apply. Occasionally a few times. Check the mission file for the season prefix as mentioned above too ... I think it has to do with the terrain levels addressed in the maps. An in my case the Velikiye was always the trouble maker here ... Also had problems with passive (non-linked entities) train wagons floating above ground . Planes behave in this zip, unfinished mission however. JG3_Werner Posted January 22, 2020 Author Posted January 22, 2020 Thanks jollyjack, I will pursue your suggestions further and I appreciate you sharing the file.
=EXPEND=Dendro Posted January 23, 2020 Posted January 23, 2020 Yeah... I have a winter Lapino practice map and when I land my plane goes under the runway and crashes. I also skidded after pulling out too late and my plane burrowed under the snow like a mole.? Same issue?
JG3_Werner Posted January 23, 2020 Author Posted January 23, 2020 I don't know exactly how I fixed it, but I created a few new missions on VL, each time with a simple IL2 starting On Parking to test things out, and each time checking the .MISSION in notepad to see if the SeasonPrefix was specified properly as described above in this thread. Twice when I opened the mission SeasonPrefix was blank, and so I wrote it in manually, and those times I had no sinking problem. I'm not 100% I know the mechanism behind the problem (sometimes the computer would write in the Prefix and those attempts failed, but authorship of that file shouldn't matter), but I would recommend to those in similar circumstances to build super simple VL missions and test for this issue before investing the time in detailed building.
jollyjack Posted January 28, 2020 Posted January 28, 2020 (edited) I just had the same situation once again. JimTM suggested open the mission in the editor and save it again. That usually works, but IMO not always as experienced recently. Someone suggested DELETE the msbin file before loading (guess with the repaired season prefix). That worked !
