Beebop Posted January 20, 2020 Posted January 20, 2020 (edited) I have a question about vehicles going Off Road. I am building a tank column. For a portion of the trip it will be On Road. ( I am familiar with this process as I have successfully created several truck columns. My question is, when the tanks leave the road how smart is the AI? Will I need to plot waypoints between the lines of trees that outline fields and go along roads or is the AI smart enough to figure the route itself as long as I put waypoints reasonably close to visible breaks in the tree line? Neither manual address that in particular. They're examples appear to have the Off Road vehicles in an open area free of any obstructions. In addition I have noticed that unlike 46 aircraft do not overshoot waypoints the turn sharply like a semi making a turn. They seem to "Cut the corner" so they stay on route better. Do vehicles do the same thing? i.e. will they "cut the corner" and make a smooth turn at a 90 degree turn or pivot abruptly? Thanks in advance. (for once I'm not crying "My 'X' won't move. I'm learning, slowly, slowly...) Edited January 20, 2020 by Beebop
Habu Posted January 20, 2020 Posted January 20, 2020 About vehicles, there are no collision between vehicles and trees. So you can have a begin and an end point which go through the tree. 1
Beebop Posted January 20, 2020 Author Posted January 20, 2020 Magic trees! OK, thanks. I may still put in a couple of waypoints so they don't just barge through in case the player comes upon a tank driving through a tree and thinks their days of using psychedelics have come back to haunt them. LOL.
Habu Posted January 20, 2020 Posted January 20, 2020 It's juste for Ai, tank player have collision with tree.
Beebop Posted January 21, 2020 Author Posted January 21, 2020 These tanks will be intended for AI only. Proof that "The Force" governs AI here just like in 1946.?
LLv34_Temuri Posted January 21, 2020 Posted January 21, 2020 How good is the AI in routing itself around blocks? Say, if I put some dugouts etc. on its path, will the AI just collide with them?

Test, but i think you have to draw a path of waypoint if you want to avoid collision.
Zooropa_Fly Posted January 21, 2020 Posted January 21, 2020 You will likely have the problem, in a column, that all vehicles will turn as soon as the first hits a waypoint. This makes navigating them a bit tricky.

In this way they keep their column structure even without roads. And you can change formations. Example you have an openfield and you put your tanks spread abreast, then you have to go through a narrower place like a road that goes through a village, then you can put them into a OnRoad Column. This is easily said. But in practice and the way it is implemented unfortunately makes the formations changes very long and with the various vehicles sometimes hitting one another or just trying to avoid themselves. If you do not plan all this very carefully it becomes painful, but it works. Ships should be allowed to have the OffRoad Column Formation, to avoid them turning simultaneously in parallel. I have not tried if this works. Edited January 23, 2020 by IckyATLAS
