The crash that never came...

What luck.  Plunging towards the line of German vehicles, we released our bombs and rocketed skywards again before turning and coming back to strafe the survivors.  Too late, we saw the trees ahead and pulled back frantically on the stick in a desperate bid to escape.

No chance!  A tearing, tumbling kaleidoscope of images as I gritted my teeth and awaited the final explosion that would end us all.

Silence...

We were down.  Or were we???  The ground seemed oddly distant. The aircraft was swaying.

I looked at Boris.  He looked at me

"Are you okay?"

After a time we realised what had happened to us.  Some said it was impossible.  Boris and I had had our doubts too. But now we believed.

Quietly and taking care not to move, we decided to wait until somebody brought a ladder...

Well done 777!

Now that's actually pretty cool, love the look on the gunners face.

Quite a difference from 1946, where lightly touching a 3D tree would make your plane pop like a piñata full of TNT.

I take my hat off to the devs :)

Gnnn....  I think it's a bug to me... I doubt firstly that a tree would be able hold up an aircraft like the Pe-2... second... it sounds like you were diving in there at speed... Sorry to snow on the parade...

At least Boris doesn't look harm...but what about the rear gunner...Mr Vladimir? I hope he is also ok ;)

Nice pics!!

You don't want to know what happened to Vladimir... it ain't pretty. Some Ents got angry at him and...

Hilarious!

It's not a bug, same thing can happen in RoF. If he hit one tree that tore off most parts and continued into the next tree being slowed down sufficiently then there is no reason for it to not get hung in the tree.

I wasn't diving. I was flying straight and level just a few metres off the ground strafing a Hannomag when I pulled up to avoid the stand of trees. Pieces were torn off as I hit the treetops. I was out of control then, tumbling through the air and waiting for the flash. That's when I fetched up in a tree in someone's backyard.

That is a very awesome post! Well done with the commentary!!!! Very cool

That is excellent! The little details are always lovely!

I hit a tree the other day and was amazed to not have the wing break off immediately.... it stayed on although clearly broken and unstable. It took a while before my high G turn dislodged it :D Like I said... it's the little details that are amazing.

That's really cool, and very impressive.

Now try and reproduce it.

did you at least get a splinter in your thumb? ( I serisously hope that crew damage model have that kind of fidelity ;) )

That's some difference to the on/off collision model of old IL2!

I agree. A 16,000lb a/c would not be sitting in a tree.987_original.jpg

The "physical" explains:  It's because the tree are frozen, then it becomes like steel, hold more weight.   :P:lol:

After all 1/2 P-2 weigh only ~4000Kg... ;)

I'm pretty sure the damage model was designed for this:

A plane going in excess of 250-300km/h would not stay in a tree. Maybe a flying stringbag like those in WW1 or a Storch. Funny pic nevertheless :D

I think what was left of the aircraft was doing 120 or less by the time we hit the last tree. I was on the EU-Expert server and attacking the German vehicles on the edge of that little town to the north west. My last run was against the Hannomag with the 20mm (hit it, thank God) when I struck the first trees just behind it. The wreck with me and Boris inside was lobbed some distance into the town. Not sure how many trees we hit in total, certainly more than a few though and this slowed the cabin and half a wing down considerably. Edited by Feathered_IV

That gunner creeps me out, he's always looking right at me.   Every time I turn around he's giving the eyes and it makes me glad I don't have to drive the airplane standing up.

Now I run on a triple screen display and by nature the closer you get to each end of the display (far left and far right) the image distorts or rather magnifies and items can look almost 2 times there size.   So at times when I turn around and he's on the edge of my screen he's creeping me out those eyes.  Can I get a gunner who's not always looking at me

Aircraft slow down when impacting trees? No way. There are pictures of planes in trees that aren't stringbags/actually all metal aircraft? No way!

There's always experts even when there is visual evidence literally sitting in front of them.

Pretty cool pics Feathered. You don't have the flight recorded by any chance do you? We might fly this sim for years before anyone every does that again.

I didn't record the entire flight, but I did record a minute or so of me hanging in the tree so I could go back to check the externals to see if what I thought was happening was really true.

Splitting hair now FuriousMeow? ;) Planes could stay in a tree, depending on the size of the tree, how many of them and of course weight of the aircraft, speed it comes in etc. I do not think a single small tree could hold a Pe-2 smashing into it due to various reasons, like the weight and impact force. Take a car and smash it into a tree at 120-150km/h and see what happens ;) What we see in pic is a funny moment within BoS. Nothing else.

I don't think it inconceivable at all. All that was left was one engine, half a wing and the crew area when it came to rest. It might be a one in a million, but its possible. ;)

Why would ya bother arguing about something like this? Another sim has superior tree-modeling? I mean really, is there not anything better to think about?

Never underestimate the Tree Huggers :D

Tree collision is like swastikas, it's entirely possible to live without it but for some it's the single most important thing in a flight simulator and there are endless and pointless arguments about it.

exactly, to be honest I'm happy that the tree collision is implemented, don't care if the plane gets stuck there or not. I mean, seriously guys?!

FuriousMeow

Trees that can be collided with are important to flight sims. Hedge-hopping was very frequent. Otherwise, just remove collision detection for everything from hangars to bridges to houses. No point with them being collided with. Proper ground handling and modelling is also important unlike clickpits.

ME...OWWW!!! fft! fft!

No tree collisions are not that important and clickpits will be essential with the advent of the oculus rift.

Either tree collisions are important, or no object collisions are. Houses and trees, one is all over the map and used as cover by moving ground units the other is in concentrated areas. Sure, fly through trees and houses, and everything. They are important.

OR won't make clickpits essential, it will make HOTAS essential - the whole point of those being so you don't need to fumble with a keyboard or a mouse.
