I always had problem with the 111's dropping bombs so slow the last bomb was dropped when the group initiated the turn passing over target - do you have a trick to make them drop more eagerly or has this been fixed in one of the last few patches?

I believe 80 or 100m spread is default.  Use 20m spread for accuracy at all alts (not 0 m) and increase from there if you want them spread out more. (Bomb distributor delay key binding)

How can you play this with the current steam version?

I just see the Britain map...

Just go into the FMB and from the load map option choose Winter, then you can play in any weather you want. Autumn is the other option
