ACG_Orb Posted December 29, 2019 Posted December 29, 2019 Hi all Apologies if this is covered elsewhere, I've searched loads of previous posts and guides but can't find the specific bit of info I'm after. There's loads about speed, angle of attack, height etc... But little about actually aiming at the target. Through trial and error I seem to get most hits by aiming above the target with my crosshairs (high speed low level attack). But I'm using guess work on bomb release distance from target. I'm looking for a consistent and repeatable crosshairs aiming method. Can anyone advise? Cheers!
Lusekofte Posted December 29, 2019 Posted December 29, 2019 (edited) I am afraid there is no constant without constant speed and altitude. I hit my target best coming in a dive a distance from target level out low and drop the bombs a fair distance from target dependent by speed, but speed is mostly as fast as it ever will go, therefore pretty constant. I must add that after latest spotting system, where low planes are easily spotted, I come in from altitude above 4 K. If you do this enough times in QMB. You will be successful 90% of the times. With two bombs onboard you will hit at least once but mostly with two. I usually drop all my bombs in one pass, because staying there bring enemy. Going high you find a flight path that bring targets in a line ahead Alerted AA has less chance hitting you too, it seems to me they are much more likely to hit you in a direct dive. I fly mostly red , so I have no idea why I tell you this. Never mind what I said. Fly slow and level at 300 meters altitude straight over AA and drop just above it Edited December 29, 2019 by No.322_LuseKofte 1

Do you line up using the crosshairs bang on the target, low or above? When I divebomb with the ju87, if AoA and the turn/slip ball are all correct, the bomb will drop more or less centre of the crosshairs. With fighter-bombers this doesn't appear to be the case. Lusekofte Posted December 29, 2019 Posted December 29, 2019 (edited) When lining up for the dive I always do it 90 degrees to the line I want to fly for bombing. Mostly because the view is better and turn slow the dive a bit. When you dive in a slow turn make sure you do not use rudders the plane need to fly staright. if I want to hit hangar with planes parked in front I aim at front part of hangar. If you use rudder your aim is lying. You skid sideways. This is very important in all types of aerial combat. For shooting rudders are for last correction in shooting. For bombing abort no rudder Edited December 29, 2019 by No.322_LuseKofte 1

Do you line up using the crosshairs bang on the target, low or above? Generally speaking, the steeper the dive angle the closer the crosshairs will be to the target when you release. The shallower the pass, the crosshairs will start out low/before the target and drift up to the target. If you are making a low altitude level delivery you will need to experiment (based upon your speed and altitude) to see when or if the target has passed out of sight (under the nose). An easy method IMO would be to set up a QMB sortie, unlimited ammo, and the bombing aid turned on. Then record multiple attacks. When replaying the track(s) of your bombing, look for three things. 1) where did you put the crosshairs initially? In RL we called this "initial pipper placement." 2) pause when you pickle your bomb(s) noting where the crosshairs at the moment of release. 3) Look to see where your bombs hit in relation to where you had the pipper at bomb release. Lusekofte Posted December 29, 2019 Posted December 29, 2019 IT is correct as Busdriver say, I just included a survival pack into it. In MP a second pass is usually a suicide attempt most likely to succeed Making a straight dive to a heavily defended area likewise, but more accurate for most people 1
ACG_Orb Posted December 29, 2019 Author Posted December 29, 2019 Thanks all for the advice, this is really useful and something I can use to practice with. Much appreciated! ?
356thFS_Melonfish Posted December 29, 2019 Posted December 29, 2019 Load up QMB, stick two 500kg underneath and set unlimited ammo, go bomb some stuff, shallow dives and release just as the target is obscured by the revi mount. Honestly I do it by feel now, I've got lots of hours in the 110 she's a fantastic crate. Start big on your targets, hangers and factories, then go smaller, 3 second timers are good but if you're going to go as a group consider 10 seconds so you don't blow your wingman to hell! 1

I did this exact thing and it helped get my eye in no end. Forgot about the QMB + bomb assist until it was mentioned earlier replies. I now have a mental picture to work off... Its not perfect but managed to score some good hits on WoL tonight. Thanks all. 1
von_Michelstamm Posted December 30, 2019 Posted December 30, 2019 (edited) I come in at around 45 degrees with target in my bomb site, hold it there, then pull up as I get nice and close and drop bombs as the target leaves the bottom of the sight glass and goes behind base of the revi site. von_Michelstamm Posted December 31, 2019 Posted December 31, 2019 If you want to practice a bit, I find the p38 with 500lb bombs is extremely easy to repeatedly do this with, and the climb helps you get right up to try again (with unlimited ammo). bodenplatte map has great targets to practice on, such as those round gashouses in big cities. Please don’t practice on cathedrals this close to Christmas though ? ?? 2
