adler_1 Posted December 27, 2019 Posted December 27, 2019 hello I keep damaging my engines in dogfights online . At over 2600 RPM my engine is not lasting 10mn as declared but breaking almost immediately . I will be cruising at 2200 rpm for a while then getting into a dogfight , its difficult to watch your rpm at the same time and i cannot limit to 2600 rpm and sometimes go to maximum for climbing or chasing but i am sure its not for 10mn and they break within a minute or 2 , its strange because if i go into single mission to test and settings as manual the engine does'nt break after 10mn , i get just a warning but nothing happens after that . I thought of finding a way of limiting the thrust of the accelerator but its messy and i abandoned that . Can someone pls give me some insight into my issue and the best solutions .
von_Michelstamm Posted December 27, 2019 Posted December 27, 2019 curious why you're flying messerschmitts based on RPM instead of ATA? Shouldn't you be mentally flying via the throttle and letting the governor take care of the rest?
L3Pl4K Posted December 27, 2019 Posted December 27, 2019 You need full throttle/100% You should read this:
adler_1 Posted December 27, 2019 Author Posted December 27, 2019 hello i have the above info but i frequently break the engine during combat . Is it possible that i am causing damage by reducing and increasing the power too violently ?

Is it possible that i am causing damage by reducing and increasing the power too violently ? It's all about the time limits or temperatures. E.g: if you hold the 1.7 ATA/2800 RPM power setting for more than ~10 min, but your temperatures are within nominal limits for the height you're flying at, your engine will be damaged. if you hold the 1.7 ATA/2800 RPM power setting and your temperatures exceed the maximum allowable limits before the 10 minutes have elapsed, your engine will be damaged. There are several ways to control engine temperatures (by changing the throttle setting, by controlling your speed, by controlling the radiators, etc). Usually being higher up and going full throttle while going slow leads to the fastest increase in temperatures and it leads to exceeding the limits faster since the higher you go the maximum allowable temperature limits decrease. Also, keep in mind that ATA starts to drop off above the full throttle height. This means that you can keep your throttle pushed to its maximum position for longer, than you would when below the full throttle height. (e.g. for 109 G6 1.4 ATA/2800 RPM can be held for 1-2 minutes below the full throttle height, while above you can go to about 4 minutes at 8000m, before the engine becomes damaged - if the temperatures are kept within nominal limits) Temperatures only matter if you have the radiator set to manual. If it's set to auto, it's doing a good enough job across all altitudes and speed ranges. Also, I would check if you have the prop-pitch set to auto. If it's in manual you could overrev the engine. adler_1 Posted December 28, 2019 Author Posted December 28, 2019 hell Raven I am flying online Combat Box so i believe its full manual , in the case of BF 109 's the radiators and prop pitch are auto , so everything depends on the accelerator . I am again just wondering if violent use of the accelerator in combat can cause damage . How do you change the throttle setting ? that is something i think will help me .
Raven109 Posted December 28, 2019 Posted December 28, 2019 (edited) The rate at which you change the power setting (i.e rapid changes in throttle position) should not matter in the 109. The throttle setting is just the throttle position. After you run the engine at full emergency power, the engine needs resting, so make sure that you throttle back. So, for example, if you've run it for 5 minutes at emergency power, you'll need to run it at combat power for a period of time (meaning that you need to rest the engine), before you can run it again for 10 minutes at emergency power. adler_1 Posted December 28, 2019 Author Posted December 28, 2019 Raven , i have read all the cautions beforehand but i still was breaking , i tried a test online for about 7-8mn full throttle and it did'nt break so i am going to memorize better my flight log in flight and get more disciplined . thanks for the advice .

Try and record your flights, by using the in game recording tool. Then review what went wrong. Edited December 28, 2019 by Raven109
