Gunners vision when set to fire at short range

It seems gunners cannot see more than 200 meters. They call out "he's engaging" at about 200 meters. I would expect a real gunner to call out a contact at 1KM at least, thus giving you time set the autopilot and man a gun. Now they call out the contact at the same time the attacker opens fire.

Seems like it would be a simple update.

I believe he calls out at the distance he starts firing, set him to fire  at long distance and he will call out earlier.

Then he wastes all his ammo spraying away at 800 yards. He should be able to see things, speak and not shoot.

They also can't see friendly planes flying close in formation. The gunners should be able to give us much more information than just "he is engaging"... Some day I hope.
