Charon Posted December 21, 2019 Posted December 21, 2019 On the fourth sortie of my first single-player campaign, I was bounced and critically wounded by two 109's while trying to return to base in my damaged MiG-3. I tried to bail, but couldn't because of my injuries, and before long the camera cut to third person and I watched as my plane pitched over and dove into the ground at least 500m below. I thought that was the end of it, but when I exited the mission I discovered that I somehow survived, and my plane was listed as "crashed" rather than "lost". Five days later, I'm released from the hospital. Is it not possible to die in career mode? Realism is custom with only 'warmed up engine' checked, and the campaign difficulty is 'medium'. I'm pretty sure I checked 'Ironman', too.
19//Moach Posted December 21, 2019 Posted December 21, 2019 (edited) It's totally possible to die. I do it myself very often. Accepting that it happened is optional though, unless you have "Iron-Man" checked on that career. If you hit "Finish Mission" after having become defunct instead of "restart", it'll leave you with a dead pilot and no "next day" button to click. You then have to start another career. You may have had an unusually lucky pilot (glitch?) in that event you mentioned. Mine usually stay dead when they die Edited December 21, 2019 by 19//Moach
Charon Posted December 21, 2019 Author Posted December 21, 2019 Huh, alright. It definitely seemed like the sort of crash that should have been fatal, and if not fatal at least the precursor to many months of physical therapy. It doesn't feel right to continue that campaign, but maybe I'll bring them back for a stint over Stalingrad.
19//Moach Posted December 21, 2019 Posted December 21, 2019 (edited) Is Soviet pilot! Stronk! Crash, then stand right back up again! Bone broken, no hoohoo, got more bones to spare in body. Plane broken, lost wing? No problem; Got another wing on plane! Plow head-on into ground? Too bad for ground! Is dirt, dirt weak! Make way for stronk Soviet plane. Is very stronk. unreasonable Posted December 21, 2019 Posted December 21, 2019 In my case, impossible not to die in career mode. 3 1
US63_SpadLivesMatter Posted December 21, 2019 Posted December 21, 2019 I'm 100% sure you can die in career mode.

There are a lot of crashes in game that you can miraculously just shrug off. It's not realistic, but human physiology isn't really the primary aim of the game, so one may just see it as a limitation and carry on. It's probably better than dying too easily.
