On December 17th. 1903 an event took place that eventually brought all of us together here...

Yes. Although I'd pick a different date:

26 September 1905

 

Flyer III completes a long flight including turning around and landing where it took off. The award for the first powered controlled heavier than air flight still goes to the Wright Brothers (and the U.S.) when this higher standard is applied... but it removes a lot of the ambiguity and apparent 'gaming' of definitions that people debate.

He built one of the first wind-tunnels, put a lot of work into establishing the minimum amount of power required for an aeroplane, and was more open about his research than the Wrights (and even shared information with them).
