Megalax Posted December 13, 2019 Posted December 13, 2019 Can we get some early Spitfire IX love? Sure the IX with the tall rudder looks good, but the early IX's were quite prominent during the Normandy invasion, and the IXb was the most numerous version built at over 4000 units. 2 3
DD_fruitbat Posted December 13, 2019 Posted December 13, 2019 (edited) I think you mean mk IXc.... Having it with merlin 66 covers 43 and 44, and with a merlin 61 covers 42, would be great. Edited December 13, 2019 by DD_fruitbat

A Spit IXc wouldn´t hurt for BoN and could in theory be as easily done as a late 109 G6 by recycling already existing 3D-model parts.
HBPencil Posted December 13, 2019 Posted December 13, 2019 This has been discussed in other threads, but yes it would make sense for the MkIX to get the small rudder and the C wing added to the modifications list as they were the norm at the time of the invasion (iirc only 2-3 squadrons in the 2ndTAF had the IXe). Re the terms IXB and IXA, they were widespread quasi official terms for what we would now call the LF.IX and F.IX respectively. The IX never had the 'a' or 'b' wings, just the 'c' and 'e' wings. 2
6./ZG26_Klaus_Mann Posted December 13, 2019 Posted December 13, 2019 It's a bit disappointing to only have the late one. Definetly would love this and an LF Mk.Vc.
Jabo_68* Posted December 13, 2019 Posted December 13, 2019 It seems odd not having a Spitfire IX in BoN, especially if you don't have BoBP.

Though not a necessity, an earlier Mark IX would be interesting to have for sure! There were also still plenty of late model Mark V's kicking around during the Normandy invasion time period too. Unfortunately I suspect that any small changes would also mean doing work on the flight model and it'd take too much time to throw in as a "freebie" or a bonus. The closest we've had to that was the La-5 with the M-82F engine upgrade which was flight (or engine) model change only. BTW: There's no such thing as a Mark IXb. Confusingly you may see "Mark IX-B" in pilots logs because for a while there was no official designation for the Spitfire Mark IX with Merlin 61 and 63 and the later Mark IX with the Merlin 66 engine or Merlin 70. This was later corrected by calling them Spitfire F.IX (for 61/63), Spitfire LF.IX (66) and Spitfire HF.IX (70). 5 hours ago, Jabo_68* said: It seems odd not having a Spitfire IX in BoN, especially if you don't have BoBP. There's a bit of a mix of aircraft between the two titles and I think in the future it'll be seen as a good combination product. BoN has the Spitfire XIV while BoBP has the Spitfire IXe. Both are relevant in both places. A necessary evil I suppose of development cycles. 1 1
Bremspropeller Posted December 14, 2019 Posted December 14, 2019 Maybe a standalone collector's airplane? Kind of like the initial G-6... I also like the idea of the late-war Mk. Vs. It would make sense in terms of fleshing out the Normandy map for earlier dates. An up-rated Fw 190A-5/6 would be a good counterpart. And another (I know, yawn) 109-model: The pressurized G-1 and G-5.

I think that should be what Clostermann referred to as „Mk.Vd“ at some point (even though he had the „c“ wing). A plane that was universally hated by its crews. Fast at low level, yet they had to fly the same kind of escort missions as anyone else, at altitudes where the engine ran out of air and you bring only 60 rpg. Clipped, clapped, cropped.

B wing 60 rounds, C wing 120 rounds, but yes LF Mk Vc, Clipped, clapped and cropped.
