fhog0424 Posted December 7, 2019 Posted December 7, 2019 How does one go about warming up the engine on the p-51? Tried closing the radiators with no luck. Coolant temps still stay around 40 degrees.
Cpt_Siddy Posted December 7, 2019 Posted December 7, 2019 Put mixture on lean, keep rpm low and give it some throttle gently until it warms up.
FeuerFliegen Posted December 9, 2019 Posted December 9, 2019 Shouldn't you keep RPM at 100% to warm up quicker? I understand you don't want to rev it too high to damage engine, but It won't actually rev higher than a safe amount unless you throttle enough to push it there. I'd leave it at 100% RPM and raise throttle to 10-15%.

Below 1200 IRL lead will foul the sparks as well. But you are right in the sense that it is generally a bad idea warming up an engine at idle. As the engine will not readily warm up, you‘re just running it cold over extended time. If by RPM you mean the prop-lever, then it doesn't really mean a lot where you'll keep your lever, as the props are on the fine pitch stops anyway. The blades will only start to move at higher throttle-settings, where selecting a lower governed RPM will actually take the props off the fine pitch stops. Normally, you'd cycle the prop-lever a couple of times during runup: It shows you the governor actually works and it also feeds warm oil to the system.
