Every time I see pictures of that Malcom Hood on the P-47 or P-51, my mind's eye immediately sees this:

I'd appreciate it if you wouldn't post pictures of my ride without permission ?

It requires higher Supercharger Gearing. Which isn't impossible to do. On a Yak it would bascially mean making the High Gear the new Low, and adding another even higher Gear.

Now you have issues like cooling to deal with. Hypotheticals are fun but don't forget Napier built a version of the Sabre that spat out 5,000 horsepower - imagine that in a Tempest and the Yak is nothing by comparison!

Put a later Mustang on the Eastern Front, 700m Cloud Cover, Mud/Dust Runway and the same Fuels as used by the Russian Aircraft (somewhere in the low 90s Octane) and give the Crew 24h to tune the Aircraft for Service (Supercharger Gearing, Adjusting Injection and Ignition, Test Flying and Essential Repairs/Improvements) and then pit them against one another in a War of Attrition.

Result will be a Mustang likely without Gear Covers and locked Tailwheel, Massively derated Engine (at best 52"@3000, ca. 1200hp) up against a Yak-9U or La-5FN at 1650 to 1850hp and far less draggy, thus massively outclassing the Mustang.

Reverse this to the Western Front, 2000m Clouds, Good Airfields and 150 Octane. Suddenly you can uprate the Yak or the Lala to Power Levels well beyond 2000hp, and their Airframes were already Low Drag to begin with, so they will also leave the Mustang absolutely in the Dust.

Pity is the Yaks will barely be able to defend their own airfields, much less a high-atitude bomber over Berlin.

Agreed. Comparing aircraft out of the context that they were designed for or actually operated in can't help but result in an "If my Auntie had balls, she'd be my Uncle" level of analysis.

I mean, even in the hypothetical Eastern Front scenario, you know that the Americans are bringing steel matting for the airfield, 150 Octane fuel and an ice cream machine for the Mess Hall.  ?

The 150 octane ice-cream served on steel-matting sounds tempting!

If we're doing fantasy "best possibe versions of our favourite planes", how about a 109 that isn't forced to specialise as a high altitude bomber hunter, only 1 MG 131, no bulges, 150 octane instead of MW50. Basically a G-2 with Erla canopy and 1800 horse power. That sounds pretty terrifying...

Or the EZ42 gunsight in the Dora

EZ-42 was also installed in the A8 and used in combat.

Just teasing lads, everyone knows the Japanese had the best planes.

indeed. as an added bonus, if you ever get cold, there is a source of fire always nearby in a Japanese aircraft.

Some interesting stuff about P-47 from a guy who flew that baby with 9th AF (510th fighter squadron)
