Is each "Great Battles" module a standalone game?

Yes, each one can be purchased and played as a standalone title. Together they form a kind of IL-2 GB "world".

When you buy any one module, you actually download everything, but you can only play/use other items once you purchase it, which then "unlocks" it.

Only difference is if you buy through steam. Steam treats BoS as a "base game" and the rest as DLC, so you must buy BoS in order to buy any of the others. This is because of how valve treats the game and does not reflect reality. As noted you can buy any one product and be able to play. You can even play on multiplayer maps you don't own, and be a gunner in planes you don't own as well.

What if I only buy a collector plane? Do I still get all the maps in multiplayer?

That should be correct, but I'm not sure how well that would work. No single player at all? Would be hard to learn how to take off and land. Someone buy a Po-2 for a buddy that doesn't have the game and let me know how well that works

As I understand it, you still need at least one of the base games to play. However, I believe it could be any of the Great Battles games, possibly even Battle of Normandy* or Tank Commander to have a map. 

 

*When games are in open beta, they get access to a test map while the main map is being worked on. I don't know if Normandy is even at that point yet.

Map is released when it's ready and not before. It's also usually one of the last things that's released.

Yes, but there is another smaller specific map that you get access to for game a where the theater map is not ready yet. I forget what it is called, but it is the same mall all the games got access to when they were in early access state. I just don't know if BoN alone gets you access to that yet. I'd think it would show up once at least one of the fighters is in early access mode, but just don't know.

You mean the velkuri luki map, which is a complete map created by a mod team and officially adopted.

You also get Lapino (small Stalingrad cutout) as I understood with any (Box game) purchase
