Ghostrider147 Posted December 2, 2019 Posted December 2, 2019 Hello fellow pilots, Couple of days ago I posted some questions about some stutters I experienced in VR, bottom line is that I'm probably better off getting a new CPU. I was thinking about something like an i5-9600k or an i7-9700k, are these good options for IL-2 in VR? Do you guys also have suggestions for suitable MoBo's and RAM speeds for these CPU's? Currently I'm on a Ryzen 5 2600 with 2400 MHz RAM (16GB DDR4) I'm aware RAM speeds affect Ryzen CPU's a lot, but I'm looking for more of a long-term, big upgrade. Just something so that I can fly in career mode without too many framedrops and stutters
Voyager Posted December 2, 2019 Posted December 2, 2019 (edited) If you already have an AM4 motherboard that can handle Zen 2 CPUs, you're better off upgrading to a 3600, 3700X or 3800X. They perform very similarly to each other in IL-2 and I've been getting results comparable to Intel I9 CPUs on my 3800X. Be sure to check the prices and bundles before you pick which one. The 3800X's have a slightly better bin than the 3700X, but not $50 better so they've been getting strep discounts and good game bundles to get them to move. The 3600 will usually get up to around the same single thread performance as the 3600X, 3700X and 3800X, and will save you some money if you want to go to Zen 3 next year. Adsendum: If you're looking at Intel, absolutely wait until the 10th gen chips are out. Intel is depreciating the current socket and are cutting prices across the board for their 10th generation 14nm parts. From leaked pricing, it appears that intel is planning on selling a 5.2Ghz, 8 core, 16 thread I7 for about $350 (I7-10700k), and the new socket should be compatible with the 10nm Sunny Cove based CPUs. I ended up going with AMD this cycle because I could not wait for the new socket, and I expect the Zen 3 to be competitive with the Intel Sunny Cove chips, and since you already have an AM4 motherboard, you're going to get better results for less by just switching to a Zen 2 chip.
