ph1317 Posted April 12, 2014 Posted April 12, 2014 The steering wheel of a Formula1 car has quite a bit functionality! One might easily press a wrong button when controlling the car at speeds >300km/h. http://www.sauberf1team.com/fileadmin/user_upload/redactors/documents/pdf/2014_SteeringWheel_EN_lr.pdf
Outlaw Posted April 14, 2014 Posted April 14, 2014 does anybody knows if f1 pilots use the clutch other than the start? that is do they use the clutch to shift gears during the race? There is no clutch pedal in F1 cars. It is completely automatic. In case anyone was wondering, before purchasing your next street Ferrari, make sure and have the F1 pump inspected. It is several thousand dollars to replace with a factory unit (although after market mounting brackets and pumps are much cheaper). oh an i guess theres nobody here avid flight simmers who takes that bs of an f1 as having so much aerodinamic load it could drive in a ceiling Are you saying that F1 cars do not generate aerodynamic down force greater than their weight? If so, feel free to provide the calcs. to back up your assinine claim. --Outlaw.
Outlaw Posted April 14, 2014 Posted April 14, 2014 There are two clutch paddles behind the wheel which are used solely for the launch. I must hang my head in shame for my poor terminology. "Completely automatic" refers to the actual shifting of gears while all other conditions are, "drive by wire". I still don't consider the launch control "manual" since the computer can always decide (right or wrong), that it will not obey your requests. Does anyone know if the launch control is required for all starts, or just the cool ones? I know the F1 transmission first offered in the 355 (I think) has no clutch interaction with the driver at all. --Outlaw.
Outlaw Posted April 15, 2014 Posted April 15, 2014 PS. I know this is the internet and usually people are being sniffy or aggressive or finding fault. I wasn't. No worries, I didn't take it that way. After watching your linked video I simply realized "completely" wasn't the best term. I didn't even know there was that much manual control in the launch. That 2 paddle system is pretty cool (for something as lame as not having a "real" clutch pedal that is). I thought the computer handled it all beyond the launch decision. --Outlaw.
