I have a 6 year old 25" Asus LED monitor at 60 Hz and was wondering if it's worth replacing it with a slightly tinier 24.5" LED that runs at 144 Hz and is G-Sync compatible.

With my new i9-9900k with RTX 2070 Super desktop, am I missing out on anything by not going to a higher refresh monitor? I really don't want a 27" monitor as I only sit about 28-29 inches away from the screen.

Any opinions are greatly appreciated.

This is the monitor I am considering as it's $80 CAD off at my local computer store:  AOC G2590FX 25" Framless Gaming Monitor

You definitely are missing out with such hardware! If you insist on FHD and 25" max, go at least for something with IPS or VA panel, not this TN garbage, as it has very bad colors.
For VA, I can recommend MSI Optix MAG241, as I have MAG271.
For IPS, ACER VG240Y looks good.

Monitor is often underrated accessory, but ask yourself why spend such money on high end CPU + GPU and then see the outcome on cheap display.

144 Hz monitors are nice to have for clearer motion and smoothness, but they're not critical in this type of gaming. In fact, I wouldn't consider any 1080p monitor with today's high-end GPUs. By pairing the 2070 S with such a low resolution, you don't fully benefit from the performance that the card can provide.

Have you considered a 144 Hz 1440p monitor? Although they're more expensive, the resolution is a nice middle ground before 4K. The image quality improvement is immediately noticeable. In my opinion, that makes a greater difference than very high frame rates in games like Il-2.

Also, do you really need to sit so close to the screen? Moving to 27" or larger would widen your options.

As said above, make sure to choose a panel with decent performance. Reviews that check things like colours are the only solution here.

I can only recommend 144Hz 27" 1440p with G-Sync. Once you try it there is no going back to potato 60Hz level.

2 important things to be aware of:

  • make sure the rest of the system can follow / render your games close to 100 Hz mark
  • 27" 1440p screen will have a much tinier pixel than 24" 1080

If this game is mostly what you play, then I'd recommend sticking with 24" 1080p.

For FPS games it will be great to have 24-27 " 1080p 144 hz , gsync with low input lag. For  Il2GB I recommend 344x1440 34" 100hz G-sync IPS or good 1080p 27 -24 " 120hz  which can be used to all genres.

60 to 120hz is a big leap

120 to 144 is noticeable but minor.
