CanadaOne Posted November 24, 2019 Posted November 24, 2019 Is there a cutoff point with the power of the video card if you stay at 1080p? I mean, I'm guessing a 2080ti for BOX is just flat out overkill. But at what point does the overkill stop? I'm buying some kinda card on sale next week. Either a 1660ti at the low end or a 2060 Super at the high end. Hope Amazon has a decent Black Friday or Cyber Monday sale, I've got video card money burning a hole in my Amazon wallet. 1

For 60 fps @ 1080p, that point is somewhere around the GTX 1070, RTX 2060 or RX 5700. With those GPUs, the game will generally run flawlessly with the highest settings and there will be virtually no perceptible benefit from anything stronger. At 1080p, refresh rates above 60 Hz and a handful of particularly demanding titles are the only real reasons to go higher. If I remember correctly, you're coming from a 1060 3GB, so the 1660 Ti would be an incremental upgrade rather than a dramatic improvement. That can be hard to justify sometimes. However, a 2060 S would essentially double your performance. Edited November 24, 2019 by Mitthrawnuruodo 1 1 1
SARFlytitus Posted November 24, 2019 Posted November 24, 2019 My recent upgrade from gtx 1060 3Gb to RTX 2060 S indeed has doubled visual quality and my Il2 time in VR…let's not talk about 1080p for me Best upgrade so far! 1 1

Yeah, my 1060 3GB is starting to cough in BOX, especially with the new map and big cities and increased draw distance. (Not to mention the beating DCS gives it.) I've been watching a ton of videos with game tests with different cards. The problem is a lot of the time it's kinda silly with one card getting 115FPS and another getting 132. It would be great if there were test track for BOX, like the Black Death track in IL2-46, so we could have some kind of standard to compare things to. The 2060 Super looks tasty, but it's right on the edge of affordability for me. The 2060 is more comfortable. I hope there are some good sales next weekend. And thank you. 1 2

It's more a question of being able to run maximum settings flawlessly and leaving some room for a possible upgrade to 1440p. Do be careful if you have to choose between the 2060 and 2060 S, as they're quite different despite the names. In terms of memory and core config, the 2060 S is actually more similar to a 2070. 1 1

Amazon Canada has an EVGA 2060 Super that's just inside my snack bracket. If they can knock off 10% or so next weekend that would be great! And I like the extra 2GB of DDR6 on the S card over the standard. And you're right about an upgrade to 1440p, but not until spring. The price of a new CPU and MB and screen for 1440p is not possible right now. I'm just a poor working man. 1
SCG_ErwinP Posted November 25, 2019 Posted November 25, 2019 IMO, 5700 is better than 2060 or 2060S. It just need better driver but it still better than both 2060 cards. 1
