Best current processor for IL2 in VR?

Recommended Posts

Current setup Intel i8700K @5.0
16GB Ram
Geforce RTX 20180Ti
Motherboard Z370 Aorus Gigabyte
HP reverb

Will a the newest fastest processor make a difference? If yes, Which one?

I was wondering this too.

I currently have an i7 7700k running at 4.2Ghz with a GTX 1080ti

I was looking at an i9 9900KS

Not sure if this would increase my VR FPS more than replacing my graphics card with an RTX 2080ti

Went from a 1080Ti to a 2080Ti and did see an increase in performance.

Very happy with my 9900k, however I came from  a 4820k previously.

8700k to 9900k may not be worth the expense for a marginal gain, 8700k is still a very good cpu.

I'm also curious how CPUs  stack when  you use VR.  Specially how this newer high core count CPUs from AMD perform in VR.

I still think boost clock is the king and most likely 9900ks is still the king, but i never seen a proper review with VR involved.

Miss the good old days of SimHQ.  :(

You already have the fastest GPU, so you could only update the processor, but you might not see a difference. The i7-8700K has basically the same performance of the i7-9700K. You could add two cores with the i9-9900K, but Il-2 is mainly single threaded and what matters is clock, not core count. Unless you are a heavy streamer, I would not bother to replace the i7-8700K. You would also require a better cooling solution for the i9, preferably a custom loop.

Perhaps Il-2 have problems with Hyper Threading and a native eight core (i7-9700K) would fare a bit better, but it might not be the case.

And even if you choose a binned chip, like the i9-9900KS, you will likely not see a big difference to go to 5.2Ghz. You also incur in the risk of getting a bad binning. The KS series seems to only worry about the 5Ghz mark, and there are people out there with KS chips that are not so good as some K series. Looks like they just gathered a bunch of chips that could get to 5Ghz without caring about voltage and such.

For clock alone, you are stuck with the chip lottery. You can delid your chip and try to go to 5.2Ghz. You can try your luck with the i7-9700K, which is soldered (although it has a thicker die) or you can get a pro binned i9-9900KS, like the ones of Der8auer (U$ 1.100.00). But that’s for who is just playing around and has the means.

Perhaps on the VR thread people can attest how clock affects FPS and if 6 native cores / 12 threads (i7-8700K) is behind in some way of the 8 core / 8 threads of the i7-9700K.

Is that 8700K @ 5.0ghz with a zero AVX offset? IL2 uses AVX so the chip will be running at whatever minus the offset.

As others have said you might change up to a 9700K or 9900K and try to push faster than 5.0ghz, which would in theory be an improvement. I've been watching my CPU frame times recently and most of the time I am not CPU limited, on an 8086K @ 5.0ghz (same as 8700K @ 5.0) with Rift S (80hz, so 12.5ms max frame time). IL2 does like frequency, so going up to 5.2ghz will help in the handful of cases where the CPU frame time creeps up above a magic number, but you'll still find situations where anything short of a 6ghz nitrogen chip will run over the allowed CPU frame time.

Will increasing from 16 to 32 GB help for Multiplayer stuttering?

Maybe try boost your GPU

I have done with mine and feel it help

I would wait for the next NVIDIA GPU 3080ti or try to overclock that 8700k to 5.1-5.2

Yep. That sounds about right. At this point we still have the RTX2000 series sitting, for over a year, overpriced,at the top with no competition. Next year there's a very good chance AMD will have a competing card at the top of the graphics food chain, and that should bring the price down for Nvidia cards as well.

There are rumors already that RTX3000 cards will be quite a bit more capable and cheaper:

NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3070 - 12GB

NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080 - 12GB

NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080 Ti - 16GB

https://www.tweaktown.com/news/68455/nvidia-geforce-rtx-3080-ti-more-vram-way-faster-cheaper/index.html

I'll definitely wait for the next generation cards. Will see how they perform and then decide on a company and card.

Unlikely. DCS is a resource pig and can actually use the extra RAM, but IL2 is a little more refined. If you went to lower-latency RAM that might give a slight improvement, as we know IL2 likes lower memory latency. If you're overclocking you can take a look at the RING RATIO setting for your CPU, which is the speed the memory interface runs at. Usually its a few hundred megahertz lower than the CPU frequency itself, but if you increase that you lower the memory latency and IL2 appreciates it. But, ring ratio (also called uncore clock) can require some voltage fiddling to get right, not the core CPU voltage but some of the other ones.

Hi guys....I m totally a noob in a VR matter..

Just orderd this laptop  with these requirements.

Are in your opinion a decent setting to try the VR?

MSI GL 75 9SE-029IT

Nvidia RTX 2060 GDDR6 6 GB

17,3 FHD

I7 9750H

16 GB ram

256 GB NVMe PCIe SSD

1TB Sata.

Many txs for you help
