If I ever get time, I may do this sort of in-depth research and template creation for the P-51B/C.

I forgot to add this if you guys ever want to make an educated guess as to what the data plate should read. I used to be a Manufacturing Engineer at Boeing and put my knoweledge to woork and how aircraft are ordered and produced.

It’s still a mystery (to me at least) how the Special Project Number (Spec. Proj. No.) in the data block is correlated with the serial numbers or model block of USAAF aircraft in WWII. I thought at one point I’d nailed it down to being tied to certain models or a range of S/N. Still not sure.

I recently found an old thread on a British modeling site where someone speculated the numbers were to designate where the A/C was to be shipped. Im not sure about that either. Im pretty sure I’ve seen pictures of the same Spec. Proj. No. on Mustangs in the ETO as some of those being based in the Pacific. There must be a record of this buried in some archive someplace. I sure would like to know the answer.

It is a range, if you lookm at my spreadsheet you'll see how I did it and how I broke it up based on photos and other iformation.

You know this is the thread for my template right? You’d be better off posting in the P-51 skin thread. It will get lost in here.

Yeah, I need to research that one. I imagine it is a bit different than the 'D'.
