Catching Up From Many Years Ago

Recommended Posts

I have been away from flight sims for over 12 years.  Just bought a new Digital Storm gaming computer and an Alienware 34" curved monitor.

I have my original IL2 disk that I bought many years ago.  The new computer has Windows 10 with an EVGA RTX 2070 Super video card (i7 cpu and 32GB of RAM).

Will my old IL2 disk install on this new computer without any compatibility issues, or, is there a new version of the game that I need to purchase and download?

The Alienware monitor supports  3440x1440 resolution (aspect ratio is 21:9) - will that be achievable in IL2 these days?

Hi Bob,

Nobody else is answeing, so I guess I will. I don't know if the old IL2 disk will install on your new computer without compatibility issues. I would assume there will be issues, but you may have tried it by now and found out.

Also, there is a much newer version of the game, which you might like, here is the page, on the right hand side of the screen, in the red box are the different "packages" which come with different maps and plane sets: https://il2sturmovik.com/store/battle-of-bodenplatte/

I have the old Il-2 1946 running on this WinX pc with no problems, although my monitor is nothing like as big as yours. Having said that you might be able to select that size in the game options but if not you should probably be able to change the conf.ini file. Although to be fair I didn't install it off of a disk but rather just copied it across from my back-up drive.

I should point out that there are two IL-2 Sturmovik flight sims (not counting Cliffs of Dover and Birds of Prey)... the old game you remember and the new game which this forum is for. They are completely different games with different game engines, development teams etc. With the old game the appropriate sub-forum would be this:
https://forum.il2sturmovik.com/forum/20-other-1c-game-studios-games/

However the mission4today site is still the best forum for the old game which still has an active player base. In the time you've been away it still has been worked on by a volunteer 3rd party (Team Diadalos) who received official approval to continue development of the game so you'll find it has various upgrades since you last played it such as new aircraft, maps and sfx. All the patches are available at m4t.

In short this site do not really support old IL 2

If you want to reinstall old Il 2 on your new computer there are a couple of solutions.
You can use your disc but need some modifications and I reccomend SAS to do so

or you can just rebuy it on GOG ready to fly vanilla updated version. Modded IL 2 is reccomended.
If you got a new computer I would also buy

Battle of Stalingrad

it is a new expirience in flight sims

Rather than reinstall from the original media, I bought the Steam version of IL2 1946 for the silly low price of $6.99 or so, and it self-installs and runs just fine on Win10.

That being said, I don't fly it much since the newer IL2 Sturmovik Great Battle series is so much better.  Just can't get my carrier ops fix.

Well you can with IL2 1946,  as LuseKofte posted go to the SAS site, go to the BAT section and it will give you instructions on how to up grade to BAT v3.7.2 and what to D/L.   Once installed you should also install the DGen app.  There is a carrier career starting with Midway thru end of the Pacific campaign.  Please note that taking IL2-1946 up to the latest BAT ver will take a few hours.

Good Luck.

Thank you for the information.  What I meant was, I cannot get my urge to fly from carriers with IL2 BoX series, and so still fly IL2 1946 which natively supports naval carrier ops even without the add-on mods you mention, which are nevertheless wonderful I'm sure and will check out.

Thanks for the replies.

So, there are now 2 separate versions of the IL2 series?  The version I used to play was developed by Oleg Maddox at 1C Studios.

What team has developed this new "Battle" series?  I assume they are not associated with Oleg's team?

I don't know their names but I'll tell you what, they really know what the hell they're doing.

it's a long complicated story.

for me, this (Great Battles/ "BoX") is the spiritual successor to the original IL2 and surpasses it greatly in most areas.

also there are frequent sales which are superb.

if you loved the original you'll love this.

original IL2 1946 is great and the base game is still updated, i think you will enjoy updates they have done such as AI, last patch they added playable B-24 that is great.

Il2 Great Battles is by the Rise of Flight people and is the spiritual successor to 1946 as another has mentioned. please play it, even without carrier ops you wont be disappointed and has great flight models so the planes fly like how they do in real life and the graphics are amazing

(Correct me if I'm wrong:)

The team that's developing the "Great Battles" series originated (among other sources) from the Rise of Flight team 777 Studios. ROF is a WW1 combat flight sim, still available here on this web presence and on Steam. At present the devs are integrating reworked ROF content and new content into Flying Circus: https://forum.il2sturmovik.com/forum/117-il-2-sturmovik-flying-circus/

Oleg Maddox and his team developed the BoB combat flight sim IL-2: Cliffs of Dover after IL-2 Sturmovik: 1946 and had a very rough start with this program. (It's a story for another time.) Cliffs of Dover is still actively developed by Team Fusion, who are working with the publisher 1C. Info about their upcoming version v5.0 and everything else COD-related can be found here: https://forum.il2sturmovik.com/forum/104-il-2-sturmovik-cliffs-of-dover/

So at present it's all under one roof.

IL2 Great Battles aka BoX series always seemed to me to be the "rescued" version of the real successor and, although perhaps slightly bastardized (but in a good way) through the mixing of some RoF DNA, it's a much more capable and qualified heir to the throne of the IL2 series.

I also purchased IL2 Cliffs of Dover early on but don't count it since it was clearly delayed and bogged down by an overly ambitious feature set and bloated code that never performed well, classic case of over-promising and under-delivering.  It's still installed but I don't fly it.

Linda like these two guys:

I've written a buyers guide (which is due for an update soon) that should help answer your questions a bit better. Check that out here:

https://stormbirds.blog/2018/08/18/the-il-2-series-buyers-guide-2018-edition/

Maddox Games essentially folded some time after the release of IL-2 Cliffs of Dover. That title really suffered at launch with bugs and performance issues though it still lives on thanks to Team Fusion. After that things went quiet for a bit but eventually Neoqb and 777 Studios, responsible for Rise of Flight, were brought together and formed 1C Game Studios and given the IL-2 series to develop. They used their prexisting engine, made some updates, and released IL-2: Battle of Stalingrad. The Great Battles Series has evolved quite a lot since then.

Like I said, see my buyers guide for more details. I've also got a review for IL-2: Battle of Bodenplatte, the latest release, coming soon!
