Gridset Posted November 14, 2019 Posted November 14, 2019 (edited) Hello, im having some sort of problem with my Rift S. It seems as i can never get stable fps above 39. As far as i can see my cpu usage runs about 56-80% and my gpu runs pretty steady at about 75% with some spikes up in the 90s. In oculus tray tool i can run anywhere from 0 - 1.5 in supersampling without any changes in fps. If i run supersampling at 1.7 or above my fps in menus goes down to about 40fps (about 75fps when using 1.5ss), in flight it runs between 35 and 39fps. GPU/CPU usage is about same until ss goes above 1.5 in oculus tray tool. Its playable, but i want to know if i can get better performance. I can have really good graphics or really bad graphics, the fps stays at aprox 39 anyway. Seems a bit wierd. CPU: i5-7400 @ 3.00 ghz, GPU: Gtx 1070. 16Gb ram. Rift S is connected to USB 3.0 port. thanks for any input/help ? Edited November 14, 2019 by Gridset
Mitthrawnuruodo Posted November 14, 2019 Posted November 14, 2019 (edited) You are limited by CPU performance. The moderate CPU usage across all cores is misleading because monitoring software shows averages rather than instantaneous loads. However, the low GPU usage is a clear sign. The i5-7400 is quite slow by VR standards with its max turbo of 3.5 GHz. The only way to significantly improve performance is to get a faster CPU with better single thread capability. Also, you should reduce graphics settings in the game if you have not already tried that. Edited November 14, 2019 by Mitthrawnuruodo 1 1
Alonzo Posted November 14, 2019 Posted November 14, 2019 Yep, you are CPU limited. Try 'Balanced' settings overall, and consider using OTT's visible hud set to "Application render performance". This will show you the CPU and GPU frame times. You need them to be below 12ms in order to hit 80fps. 1
chiliwili69 Posted November 14, 2019 Posted November 14, 2019 HEY!! 1.5 in Oculus tray tool is a lot of SS, it is equivalent to 225% in SteamVR SS, which is already a lot. With 1.4 you are already rendering more than 3 times the native pixels of the display! I think you will not get any worth visual gain beyond 1.3. Just take through the lenses pictures and compare them at different SS ratio (it is the only way to avoid placebo effect). Apart from than a better CPU will definitely help. 1
Gridset Posted November 15, 2019 Author Posted November 15, 2019 Thank you all for replies! I will try to tweak a bit and see then. Seems like a better cpu will be the solution in the end tho ?
