343KKT_Kintaro Posted November 13, 2019 Posted November 13, 2019 (edited) Most of you remember "Chuck Yeager's Air Combat", a combat flight simulator that Electronic Arts released in 1991. Obviously, the Yeager's sim is completely obsolete in the present day… but all hydralic leaks were modelled on it. Modelled and noted in the UI. When the hydraulic lines went damaged, you had some time, a few minutes, to decide if whether or not you wanted to use your flaps and/or gear for the last time before all of those devices turned locked. For example, after the hydraulics went damaged, you could use the remaining pressure in your hydraulic lines in order to down your landing gear and land safely. In the classic IL-2 Sturmovik sim (from 2001 to the 2006 4.07 version), hydralic leaks were modelled, and I remember me landing on my return base by means of my locked landing gear… with a completely empty hydraulic circuit on board. But this has never been noted in the UI (user interface) in the classic IL-2. Why? because no instrument gives hydraulic lines pressure? Now that I am a "Great Battles" series user… and a very happy user I must say… what about the hydraulic modelling in the new generation of simulators like "Cliffs of Dover" or "Great Batlles"? MikhaVT Posted November 13, 2019 Posted November 13, 2019 I dont know a ton about it in-game, but i know users in another thread were talking about how the P-51D should have its hydraulic system purged when the engine was off. It's mentioned that you can do a similar effect by just actuating the flaps up and down until the pressure is lost resulting in full loss of hydraulic pressure. That aircraft also had landing gear which was raised by hydraulics IIRC, and you could still release it and have it drop i think. 1
343KKT_Kintaro Posted November 13, 2019 Author Posted November 13, 2019 Obviously, every aircraft is different and has its own specifications. My question was more generally oriented. To make it easier, I'll split it in two: 1. If my hydraulic lines get damaged: will the UI note it on screen, same as all other damages ? 2. What planes do have a hydraulics gauge on their instrument panel?

[APAF]VR_Spartan85 Posted November 13, 2019 Posted November 13, 2019 Yeah I miss the old one gear drop for il2:1946.... it was pretty cool... aside from smoke or fuel leak you could say ‘oh I got his hydraulics!.... bye!’ And it was a cool effect too 1 1

No, really??!!!
ATAG_kiwiflieger Posted November 13, 2019 Posted November 13, 2019 Cliffs definitely has hydraulics modeled. In the Bf-110 for example, the left engine drives an alternator for the electric battery and the right drives the hydraulics system. If the right engine is disabled and the shaft has stopped turning, you lose the ability to move the flaps/gear although there is a backup reservoir that lets you extend the gear. Though I'm not sure if hydraulic lines can be damaged, the pneumatic system for the Spitfire's flaps can be punctured. 1
343KKT_Kintaro Posted November 13, 2019 Author Posted November 13, 2019 Thank you for your answer, Kiwiflieger. I'll try Blitz soon or late as I'm a CloDo owner since 2011. What about the "Great Battles" series simulator? What about its hydraulics? Not modelled at all?
Lusekofte Posted November 13, 2019 Posted November 13, 2019 (edited) Olegs ambition about cod was its demise. Its damage model is much more complex for sure. And team fusion have done a great job fixing the mess. It is no secret that devs ambitions on complexity is lower, in fewer word. They make the best possible sim within the game engine and budget limits. Apparently cod did not Edited November 13, 2019 by No.322_LuseKofte 1
343KKT_Kintaro Posted November 13, 2019 Author Posted November 13, 2019 So, have I to conclude that damaged hydraulic lines are not yet modelled in the Great Battles series?
Godspeed Posted November 13, 2019 Posted November 13, 2019 I fly Bf 110 alot and i have seen many times that my landing gears wont come down if i have taken damage. But im not sure if it has anything to do with hydraulic leaks. Bf 109 atleast E models had this emergency, canister based feature to force landing gears down. This is not working in this sim or the E7 does not have it.

Weird how everyone seems to be beating around the bush... i dont believe it is. You can get some cool gear damage like jams if you hit them hard enough..but not hydraulic damage. 49 minutes ago, 343KKT_Kintaro said: Thank you for your answer, Kiwiflieger. Guest deleted@134347 Posted November 13, 2019 Posted November 13, 2019 I have seen the "hydraulics failure" pop-up in technochat, however it was after taking a massive hit where flying further wasn't possible anymore... Maybe it's modeled on some very rudimentary level...

343KKT_Kintaro Posted November 13, 2019 Author Posted November 13, 2019 Hey you people, many thanks to all of you. I got a few satisfactory answers. I'll keep an open eye on the evolution of flight sims. PS: Never heard before about that Harvey Korman...

"Blazing SaddleS", role of Hedley Lamarr... by Mel Brooks.. great actor!
Rjel Posted November 13, 2019 Posted November 13, 2019 (edited) He voiced the Great Kazoo on The Flintstones. And best of all, he was great on The Carol Burnett Show, especially when paired with Tim Conway. But I digress. Now, back to your regularly scheduled forum activities.... 343KKT_Kintaro Posted November 13, 2019 Author Posted November 13, 2019 Oh my… "It's Hedley, Hedley Lamarr, not Hedy" Naturally, the above had to be pointed out, that's for sure... Sorry, the topic can continue on hydraulics. As I said, I'm satisfied with the answers.
